My curiosity is taking the upper hand. You screw something into it, but what? Marching music stand? Microphone gooseneck? Ceiling spike?

It is for attaching a lyre — so you have the option of marching with your bass!

not just for marching - attach a long spike and you can play while standing. (Provided you have your music in small copy)

Thanks! That floor spike would have to make some funny bends to clear the keys and my fingers...
Has anyone used it for mounting a microphone?

Oh, I meant to use a long floor peg instead of the normal one - not to abuse the lyre holder as a peg mount. :-P
