Hello J-MB,
Braces are necessary. Everyone has an adjustment period with them, and it's important to help your parents (I'm assuming you're a student) by making sure you don't have an adjustment before a performance/audition.
That said: it is not a big hindrance. I've had many private students improve their embouchure substantially during the initial weeks of having braces, because you are required to make some adjustments.
The impact of the metal on the inner lip is initially significant (not necessarily painful during most moments of the day), but since the mouth is in a constant bath the lips recover quickly.
You can do this -- and the long term benefits of braces outweigh the immediate inconvenience. Go for it!!!

But wow -- that's a lot of hand-wringing to get to the final statement:

I have had braces for a while and honestly I don't think iit bothers me at all. People say I will be so much better when I get them removed, but I just got the bottom bracket removed and I don't think the difference is that big.

Stop worrying about it. Very few of my students have had issues with braces; the few that did already had issues with their playing anyway (lack of effort).
Good clarinet students - it is not a big deal.

I'll second the others who don't think braces are a problem from the playing standpoint. I've had many students who played for some period of time with braces. Two caveats:
1 - Your orthodontist may have an objection to your playing while the braces are doing their work. He should know - don't try to keep it a secret from him or her. If the doctor thinks it's a problem from the dental side (because of your specific alignment problems) and is insistent about it, you may want a second opinion about playing.
2 - Try not to schedule tightenings and other adjustments too near before a big playing event. You may be uncomfortable for a day or so after each adjustment.
I've had some very good students go through braces.

You may want to consider the Invisalign braces, especially if you are concerned about the pain and the cutting from the metal on your lips, they're somewhat more expensive but the prices have really come down the last year or two, plus they have a lot fewer food restrictions. (yes, I did a search for myself on them some months ago, I didn't get them partly because I was afraid of the cutting and pain and partly because my parents were unable or unwilling to)
