Hi all,
So, I use a normal Vito barrel (I cannot tell for the life of me whether it's 65.5mm or 66mm) on my Yamaha student model. The reason I do this is because the one that came with my instrument is wood so it couldn't be used for marching band, and it was always sharp anyway. The problem is that for the past three years, I've been renting the instrument the barrel comes from only for the barrel. I'm finished with high school and it seems kind of ridiculous to be carrying around this Vito that I will never use. Of course, to return the horn I have to give the barrel too. However, I'm not done using my own horn for both marching band and concert band (I'm getting a new instrument for concert band very soon because this one looks like marching band happened to it and it falls out of adjustment too quickly, but for the time being I need something that can still be used in both settings).
My question to you all is what is a decent synthetic barrel? Something that can be used for marching but also be viable in a concert setting. Even if it's not the cheapest option, I'd be more than happy for any suggestions.

Ridenour's Ivorolon barrels are good. I use one on my husband's instrument, which I use for outdoor concerts. It makes a marked improvement.

As a disclaimer, I make custom barrels and bells. While I offer synthetic, I just started manufacturing a 3D printed wood that will not be affected by extreme outdoor temperatures, so you won't have to worry about cracking and it will be suitable in both playing environments. I also offer half-mm sizes. Because of the manufacturing costs from 3D printing, the cost is lower than many others. Feel free to reach out to me via email if you'd like more info.

I second the idea for the Fobes synthetic barrel. I just added one to my arsenal. Plays like my wood Fobes, but will never, ever crack!

I've had good experiences with various types of barrels made of wood, plastic, and hard rubber. I think the material matters less than the design. In terms of bang for your buck, I'd reccomend trying out some barrels from Pereira 3D. I have two of his barrels that I keep in my case, and find them applicable in various settings ranging from big bands to orchestral playing.

As another alternative, I'm going to mention Chedeville barrels. I've had very good results with other products from "Doctor's Products." I've not tried the Chedeville barrels; however, I feel someone should mention them as Dr. Henderson is a frequent visitor and contributor to the board . I own several Pyne barrels and I'm satisfied with them but they aren't made anymore to my knowledge.

I've known several who have had good fortune with the Chedeville barrels. However, my experience was otherwise. Even worse was playing their mouthpieces.

Fobes is making synthetic barrels now.
I have to say that I've tried the Pereira barrels and thought they were a a really interesting, affordable option!

I'll be having Ryan back on my show soon to discuss his new wooden 3D printed barrels too. Hope to also review those. It's a super cool concept. This 3D printing opens up a lot of interesting options in the music industry and I'm excited to see what other kinds of things appear going forward.
