Does anyone know what the length of the original barrel for a 1948 Buffet Pre R13 key of A would have been from the factory?

The most common barrel length for most French clarinets tends to be 67mm (or 670), followed by 66mm (or 660).

Thanks Chris. Today they make one barrel for the Bb clarinet and a different barrel for the key of A clarinet but I wonder back in 1948 if they used the same barrel for both Bb and key of A clarinets.

They may have done - Selmer used to use the same barrels on both their Bb and A clarinets back then, so I can only assume others did too.

So one needs to determine whether a 65MM or a 66MM is the correct one by checking the tuning.

If you have the current 65mm or 66mm, check the tuning and intonation over the entire range to see that most notes (but not all notes) are in tune and the clarinet is in tune with itself.

Older Buffets had a much larger bore than the R13, so measure the bore diameter at the middle tenon as that's the narrowest diameter (and the one that's mentioned in the catalogues) and also the top tenon as the exit bore of the barrel should be the same diameter as that (and fractionally wider at the mouthpiece end).
