I am glad John mentioned Wright Music. It is a good place. Jonathan is great to deal with. He previously worked at/managed two other well known shops and was the best thing about going there.

Hi, I;m planning a trip to NYC soon and want to purchase a B12 clarinet, is Woodwind&Brasswind a good place? There is Innoledy as well, which is listed as a dealer on Buffet Crampon´s web but I can´t contact them by phone and they only recieve customers by appointment. Woodwind has it at a very good price as well, but they are not listed as BF´s dealers. Thanks much,

The best place in NY to purchase Buffet stuff (i.e. B12), I think, is from Buffet itself:

They have a large selection, they don't care if you buy what they have in stock, and if you do buy, you can credit your favorite dealer (say one back home) with the sale.

Thank you so much for your answer! Thing is (I called) they only sell proffesional models, and I am after a B12...so, I feel better buying at Innoledy as they are listed as dealers but I cannot reach them, and Woodwind&Brasswind have it at the same price (the lowest I´ve found on NYC stores). Do you know the reputation of this store? They might be really well known...?

Veronica, my suggestion, and what I'd do may not work for you.

From the Metro NY area, with access to a car, I'd visit Weiner Music on Long Island.

Do call ahead. They've been in business forever, usually have a large selection and very competitive prices. Years ago, the aforementioned Jonathan Wright use to work for them.

Born and raised here, oddly enough, I can't speak of the reputation of the NY City stores.

If driving isn't possible, you can take the Long Island Rail Road from NY's Penn Station at 34th Street, below Madison Garden, to either the Mineola station or the East Williston Station. Both provide an about 15 minute walk to Weiner, or you can take a cab.

Mark Kasten at Weiner tends to handle repairs and I think in store instrument sales.

The storefront seems to run as a separate business from the internet site. Prices can vary, sometimes higher, sometimes lower, and often not by much if at all. It's best to confirm first before going.

There's nothing elegant about the store. It's their selection and competitive prices that keep wind players coming back.

Thanks for you incredibly detailed explanation! I could care less for fancy or elegant stores, I am, however, looking for a good deal. So thank you very much for the advise and the directions to get there, much, much appreciated!

If you are considering going out to LI, check Wright Music as mentioned above. There are lots of places to buy instruments, but Jonathan Watkins is one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Just as Weiner Music's walkable from a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) station, Wright Music is too--perhaps even more so. Located in Port Washington, NY, a Northwestern Long Island community, it is the last stop on that branch of the rail road: which names its branches by the last stop on them--hence the "Port Washington line."

Unfortunately the rail road, if not the Nassau County buses which serve both stores, has little North South service such that the lines that serve Mineola (the main line) and Port Washington stations intersect way back in Western Queens County, at Woodside.

The running joke with the rail road is to "change at Jamaica station": it's largest hub, in Queens County, where all lines BUT the Port Washington line that services Wright music gather.

http://web.mta.info/lirr/Timetable/lirrmap.htm

(I've never shopped at Wright Music and therefore can't say good or bad things.)

One final warning, the West most station, Penn Station, in NYC, is an ENTIRELY different entity than Penn Station in New Jersey State, which is separated by Manhattan County in NYC by the Hudson River.

Better than waste bboard space with more particulars, email me if you need more details.
