The plastic-bodied Gafton sax with metal keys caused a sensation in the 1950s. Charlie Parker played one for a while. Its lack of durability was fatal.
I have an all-plastic Lyons clarinet in C, with plastic keys. About the only good thing to say about it is that Julian Bliss started on one, but it's nearly unplayable.
I'll believe in one when I handle and play it, not until.

I have a Lyons clarinet in C which I bought for $20 on EBay several years ago. While the keywork certainly needs a light touch I wouldn't say it was unplayable. I've used it to accompany a piano and guitar duo when it was the only C clarinet I could lay my hands on and it sounded pretty good. As it came I found the springs very light which caused problems with sealing, but that was easily fixed.

I bought a Lyons plastic C clarinet not long after they first came onto the market to play the finale of 'Carnival of the Animals' on when I was at college - felt a bit odd under the fingers what with the bendy keywork but it did the job. I had to buy a Vandoren Eb mouthpiece for it though as I couldn't get on with the stock one.

I wish GUO would make a grenaditte clarinet to go with their flutes. Synthetic keys would never experience plating wear and would not upset those with nickel allergies.
