Kohlert winnenden bass clarinet dating trouble

At my local music store there is a beautifully restored wooden kohlert winnenden bass clarinet. There is a serial code on it, but I cannot find any information on its time period. The serial number is 49354. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

All I can tell you from the "Winnenden" identification is: No earlier than 1947 and no later than the late 1960s. I'm not aware of any definitive Kohlert serial number lists. During the timeframe we're talking about, Kohlert changed their bass clarinet design, so if you could provide a photo or two, we could narrow the results down a bit more.

Look at the register key - is in an automatic register key, or 2 seperate keys?

I did provide a photo, but I only took one as I was in a hurry.

Sorry, didn't see the photo attachment. You have the last version of bass clarinet made by Kohlert, so I'd guess ca. 1960s (can't get closer than that). I have to say your instrument looks to be in exceptionally good shape, so congratulations on the purchase!

A suggestion on your Kohlert bass -- the necks on this model are very susceptible to 'pull-down' (bending down from the pressure of the player), and from the horizontal angle of the mouthpiece that your one photo seems to show, I'd guess that it has already been bent down slightly. You might consider having a local tech bend the neck up slightly (carefully!) and then solder a brace across it to keep it permanently in the desired shape. I've done that with every Kohlert bass of this style I've worked on (at least a half dozen).
