i'm considering getting either cavallaro or altieri for my single R13 case. what do you guys think of them? which one should i get?
does cavallaro have a shoulder strap?
how do their insulations compare? storage room?

I have an Altieri (dbl cl case) that I like. Shoulder strap, two big pockets for music folders and other equipment and reasonalbly insulated--and they custom design them for your case.

I had a standard Buffet case cover (Jean Cavallaro makes them for Buffet; identical twins) and it worked extremely well for me. It does have a shoulder strap and an outside pocket for "stuff". My case never got a scratch and it was a lot easier to ride my bike to rehearsals with it.

I agree. I have a cavallaro cover for my Buffet double case and it works great. I found that the naugahide covered cases that Buffet includes with their high end clarinets are always prone to scuffing, denting, tearing, ect... so when I bought my A clarinet with double case I made sure to buy the cover. It fits great, alows me extra storage for my million and one pieces of clarinet music, protects my expensive case and looks great. I forgot what I payed for it but I remember it was a good price and well worth it. I'm sure my case apreciated it as well.

I have used both brands, and the main difference is the size of the bag. Cavallaro is fitted to the case, so you can fit a little bit of extra stuff in there, but not too much. Altieri gives you a lot more room, however, this allowed me, personally, to put a lot of other stuff in there that I didn't really need to lug around, making it heavier, etc... you can get both brands with different types of straps, I believe, and they all have the imitation lamb's wool lining. I have a Callaro now and I like it, nice and compact for my double case.

A little off the topic here but does anyone know the diminsions of the Altieri deluxe single bag that they offer from the IMS? I'm seriously thinking about getting theirs instead of directly formt he company, its a good 30 dollars cheaper. I have the case that came with my Festival.

I did a bit of research on case covers a couple of months ago. Have you seen how much they are? It's absolutely adsurd. I think you'd be better off finding a friend with a sewing machine, or getting a good quality bag (that fits the case) that you could use for other things as well. Of course, you could by the specially made covers of which you talk, but I'd rather spend the money on reeds!

The reason I bought a case cover was to PRESERVE my investment in my clarinet. I bought the new naugahyde case separately for my used R-13. I spend $150 for that case and so I wanted to preserve it. That's why I spent about $80 5 years ago for a new case cover. I figured that if it protected my case, it would be worth it. I don't necessarily need the insulation (i'm in so. cal), but I wanted to pamper my clarinet.
So you can spend money on reeds, but even those only last so long. I'd rather invest in the long-term care of my clarinet and case so BOTH perform and look great for years to come.

I agree, my case that came with my festival is a good $250 dollar case I'd rather spend the $85 to protect the case. Idid have a nice eddie baur bag when I first got my clarinet but its extremely heavy by itself. Now I have a cheap messanger bag but it offers little protection from the elements and everytime I pull the case out of the bag the zipper rubs against the case, and i think that eventually it will hurt the case more than help it. I think in the long run its a good investment, and it will last a while.
