My new Grabner Virtuoso Bass mouthpiece arrived today. INCREDIBLE!
As Walter states in his website: ".....biggest, boldest, richest bass clarinet tone possible, with a huge low register, without sacrificing any responsiveness or delicacy in the clarion register. I believe that this design fulfills that promise."
Boy he wasn't kidding. Full/huge lows and incredibly responsive clarion. "Breathless" pp to bold/stable fff dynamics.
I'm happy.

I love that mouthpiece! I actually have one of each of Walter's bass clarinet mouthpieces (Virtuoso, Personal, Lawrie Bloom) and I use them depending on the type of music I'm playing. I use the Virtuoso for a lot of band music like Frank Ticheli's Blue Shades, where you want that sultry low sound. For the higher music and for more orchestral work, I've taken to using the Lawrie Bloom, which can cut through an orchestra with little effort. For the variety mouthpiece, or if I don't know what's going to be thrown at me, I use the Personal, which I've played on the longest (almost 11 years or so?).
EDIT: I can't afford it at the moment, since my student loans are about to come due, but when I have the chance, I want to try out the barrels he has for sale on my soprano.

It is great that there are a few really nice bass mouthpieces out there that should fit the needs of just about anyone. Clark Fobes and Dave McClune also make really nice ones. Years ago there were not many choices and most people just searched for a good Selmer C*.

I've not played on a McClune. I did buy a Fobes Debut when I started playing again and liked it MUCH better than Vandoren B45 I was using. When I bought Walter's Virtuoso.... I thought it was like having a turbo charged mouthpiece! It's fantastic. Would highly recommend. But bottom line... whatever works for you is what's best for you.

I've got the Lawrie Bloom which I love, and was thinking of buying another as a spare, but I'm intrigued by the Virtuoso.

Would any of the esteemed colleagues here compare the Virtuoso to Vandoren B50?
I play both b50 and Grabner / Bloom model, both are great and suit different styles and playing situations with different reeds.
