I own a buffet greenline 1193 prestige with low C I originally had purchased it with silver plating but have decided to replate it in 24Karat gold, to accent my instruments dark colour, and match the other gold plated instruments in my orchestra all I am trying to figure out is, how much would that cost? I don't really care how expensive it is I just want an estimate before I go get a quote from my favorite repair shop.

Anderson Plating does a significant amount of band instrument replating, and does extremely high quality work. They replated the keywork on an R-13 for me a couple of years back and did a fantastic job for me.

You can contact them for an estimate: http://www.andersonsilverplating.com/band_instrument.html

Note that they only do the plating, so you'll need someone else to prepare the keys and refit them after they are replated. And, based on the process, that also means a full repad/recork/overhaul.

I would contact Taplin-Weir of Canada. They like to say they can replate anything. For a Bb about 5 years ago I was quoted something like $1200 (800 for the overhaul.....you need to remove and replace everything on the keys; and 400 for the plating).

Keep in mind gold is going up to $1400 and ounce and anyone selling anything gold will take advantage of the price increase. Also, make sure you HAVE a repair guy lined up who is on board. All the mechanisms have to be re-calibrated once the keys (and posts) are a slightly different size.

Contact Morrie Backun at backunmusical.com. He gold plated my Leblanc Pete Fountain clarinet (my jazz horn) last year, and it came out spectacular, and wasn't as expensive as I thought. He's the best there is.

Thanks for all the help, unfortunately I have decided to buy a new buffet Tosca bass instead, I'll just get it gold plated when I order it instead of aftermarket plating.
