 Berlioz trills
Author: gregbaker112@gmail.com

Good morning.

I am working on Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique for an upcoming audition.

Are all of the trills in the 5th movement solo in the second clarinet part up to the next scale tone? I don't see anything to contradict this except where the solo goes into A Major (concert pitch; 13 measure after 83). Should the E trills on the fist two beats go to F natural or F sharp? It appears that they should both be F natural since the modulation to major key occurs after the trills. Any other schools of thought?

Thanks.

The notes refer to the C clarinet part as written.

Alright, I just recorded this 2nd excerpt on C clarinet (albeit under tempo) recently.. I'm performing the 1st/Eb part this summer. It's such a pain and I'd hate to do it in an actual audition, hah.

From rehearsal 83 I did (In order of trills):
A -> B, B -> C, C->D, E->F, F->G, D->E, C->D, B->C, A->B, G#->A, E->F, E->F, E->F, A->B, E->F, C->D, C->D, F->G, A->B, A->B.

Assuming that 83 in your music is where it is in my copy, it actually is still in A minor at the 13th bar of 83. That's a melodic minor scale leading up to it and the harmony in the strings is very definitely still minor, so there'd be no reason to trill to F-sharp there. All the trills, as far as I see, should be to the next note in the key.

That passage, by the way, isn't a solo. It's doubled in unison and octaves by all the woodwinds (except piccolo and first clarinet). There is a solo near the beginning of the Witches' Sabbath (beginning in the 5th bar of 62) for the 2nd clarinet (in C). Is that one not required for the audition? Was the audition excerpt identified by measure number?
