i've had enough with my folding stand! i wanna get anew one. which one should i get? the manhasset or the hamilton? what's the difference. they use manhasset at school, and i guess that's pretty good, but i'm wondering about the hamilton ones.

i'm talking about the "standard" stands, not the portable kind.

Tammy -

Get the Manhasset -- the one with 3 feet sticking out at the bottom. I gave myself one for my birthday 20 years ago, and it's one of my best presents ever. In fact, get the Manhasset with the tray below, where you can put reeds, a swab and other stuff.

The Hamilton is too heavy, and you have to loosen and tighten a screw to adjust it.

Best regards.

I just recently got myself one of the Manhasset stands and love it! Nice and sturdy. No more music falling all over the floor. I would recommend getting a "stand out" as well. I forget the manufacturer, but for under $10 it widens your music stand on one or both sides. If you get two and you can spread those 3-page pieces all over the place.

What ever brand you get be sure to check the bottom screw/bolt attachment as they sometimes in early models had a tendency to work loose and required frequent tigntening. Maybe the newer models do not require this as frequently as the older ones. I know that they used to drive me crazy. You will be definitely be happier with a heavier stand. I've had a Manhasset also for several years and heartily recommend them.

Make sure you have a good set of socket wrenches for tightening up the Manhasset. I've started bringing my box of wrenches to the practice rooms with me (and leaving it in my car) so I can fix loose/wobbly stands that are more and more common (mainly because since these stands are so well built and last such a long time, they need this maintenance).

I own a Manhasset myself for practice at home, and of all the other stands I've used (incl. the Wenger and Hamilton models) I've always liked the Manhasset the best (though the Wenger, being much heavier, is better suited for outdoor concerts).

On the road, I bring along my Nilton stand (wood desk with aluminum folding base), which looks very nice but is very lightweigt (good or bad, depending on where you play).
