I am looking for a simple computer programme that I can use to compose a simple melody, play it back and then print it out. An extra would be the possibility to transpos.Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I did a search but only found programmes which were for professionals costing around 500 dollars
Best wishes

Try Coda Music's Finale Notepad. It's free and it does just what you want. Among the limitations of the free version (Finale 2001 is the upgrade) is that you are limited to one page, but your description of wanting to write a "simple melody" makes Notepad seem perfect.
Go to : http://www.codamusic.com/coda/np.asp

I'd suggest Noteworthy Composer. You can download it from the web to try, and it costs about $40 if you decide to keep it. It will do everything you said you wanted, and a lot more. I use it mostly for transposing.

Noteworthy Composer ($40 if you decide to register) is excellent for what you want to do and has a reasonable range of abilities for future needs.
Finale Notepad (free) is very limited. You cannot cannot change key signatures or time signatures in the middle of a piece.
Finale PrintMusic! ($70) is Finale's entry level software and has a reasonable range of abilities for your current and future needs. It will take a little more study to use well than Noteworthy Composer
MusicTime Deluxe (was $70 may be less now) is still available directly from GVOX and has the easiest to learn and use interface. In its price range, it probably has the most features available. Drawbacks are that it is not compatible with Windows 2000 (it does work with Windows 98 and earlier) and that it is only available directly from GVOX. There is very serious doubt whether GVOX will continue their notation software line.

Take a look at ABC2win. You only have to pay for it if you want to print out your music, so you get time to see if it works for you. Also, it will play your tune back to you in MIDI. Check it out at http://www.execpc.com/~jimvint/index.html.

I like Voyetra's Midi Orchestrator Plus. I can't recall the price but it wasn't that expensive. You can tap in a melody on the keyboard, transpose it...it's great fun, but you have to have a midi keyboard.

I'll add my vote to Noteworthy with this comment. I've been using it to help me to learn my music for community band. I've only been in the band for a few months, and never having done so before, I realize that I 'get it' at the rehearsal, but as soon as I try to remember the complicated rhythms, etc, I 'lose it' when I get home.
Noteworthy's been great because I can take those complicated sections and put the music in exactly the way it's written on the page, but it will play it for me in the same key that the clarinet plays. So, it doesn't necessarily need to change the music in front of you to do the transposition if you want to play it back in another key. (It will change the music too, if you prefer). For my benefit, it will also change the tempo, so I can learn it in 'Rosie' tempo, and then try to speed it up to 'Band' tempo.
Good Luck.
