 Financing an A clarinet
Author: Halo1115

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew a good place that I could finance an A clarinet as well as other keys of clarinets. Thanks

If you're asking about having a store open a line of credit for you, then any big retailer should be able to do that for you.

And if you are actually in Cary, NC, then you are about 3 hours drive from Muncy Winds which should be able to get pretty much any name brand you want.

Hi Paul,

Phil doesn't stock Yamahas. Other than that their service is awesome, I and my students have always enjoyed working with Muncy Winds -- and the Buffet's my students have bought have been top working order (not as good as an artist overhaul, but far better than most other stores IMHO).

With interest rates as they are now -- financing may not be a bad idea. Obviously one needs to do their homework.

Have you considered using a credit card?

If Halo1115 has Yamaha in mind, I found that any Yamaha music dealer (and I mean amps and keyboards and stuff like that) should be able to order an instrument to come into the shop on an approval basis (that is, make sure you negotiate with the owner that you don't have to accept purchase if you don't like it).

I did this with a dealer in Atlanta that only stocked the base student line Yamahas, and I wound up purchasing my CSG right on the spot!

The Ridenours routinely finance their instruments. And I heard a rumor they sell a pretty good clarinet in A.

The Ridenour "A" gets great reviews and is very affordable and you can get financing from RCP ... worth a look at. The hard rubber has a warmer tone much like Rosewood and Cocobolo.

The only Yamaha I've played pitched in A was my trusty YCL-65 ... was very good.

Yamaha and Ridenour make very consistent instruments, no need to try 30 to find a good one ...

Either brand would probably be very nice ...

Muncy Winds is a great company to work with.

I would also very highly recommend Lisa's Clarinet Shop in Illinois. I just financed my new A through her. She's a pleasure to work with and makes very sure to listen to what you want. I have the luxury of being able to drive to her store, but she will ship instruments for you to try after discussing what you want.

I couldn't be more pleased with my new A! I also bought my Bb from her and it's a fantastic instrument.

We're all assuming that you are of an age that would qualify you for financing on your own. Is that a fair assumption?

Hi everyone,
Sorry, been super busy.

Yes, I am of age to finance.

Bennett: Yes I have and instantly dismissed it as 1. I don't have a super high limit to buy it fully, and if I were to split it up, the APR on it would add almost a quarter of the price to what I would buy, the clarinet's being close to 500 dollars extra. I'm good on that.

I honestly was not thinking of yamaha at all, I was mainly thinking of something like Buffet for high end stuff, however am really open to suggestions. I personally really liked the Jupiter Capital Bb that I got for marching, so I'm open to try different brands.

As for tone and sound...... uh.... I honestly guess I don't really have a preference as I am not super picky with my sounds.........

And so far the places I've heard have been Muncy winds, Lisa's in illinois, and ridnour.

Would all of these hold true for Bb and Eb clarinets?

And yes, I should do my homework on this, but actually looking really in depth calls for a decent amount of time, and I've done nothing but work and study for finals these past two weeks.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,

Going back to the third post in the thread -- I mentioned that Muncy Winds doesn't stock Yamaha. If your Bb is a Buffet I wouldn't consider a Yamaha, not unless you're looking for something different.

That credit card suggestion could only have come from someone with limited understanding of financing. Why would anyone want to pay 15.99+% when you can pay far far less?

I bought my last horns through Music & Arts (don't ask -- long story) and they had 18 months/0.00% financing. Hopefully you'll find the same somewhere!

Jon,

A lot of good and sensible advice here.

My story of recent days has me migrating from the "major brands" to Ridenour. My major clarinet had been a 1969 Buffet R13, that I maintained in meticulous order, had it overhauled by Brannen Woodwinds in Evanston, Illinois. Their customers are the "who's who" in the clarinet world. Had Selmer Series 10 clarinets, all very wonderful, a Selmer Centered Tone for jazz and shows, my A is a rare Selmer 10G, that had been picked by the factory to be adjusted and regulated to Gigliotti standards by Moennig and Morgan. It is a fabulous clarinet, with a sound to die for!

On other posts here, I've told of my migration to a Ridenour Libertas clarinet, because of full time employment in horrific orchestra pit environments, wanting to be kind to my Buffet and Selmer horns. Well, the Ridenour Bb won me over to being my full-time Bb horn. After much consideration, I recently received the Ridenour 575A A clarinet, and it just blew my mind! It is an absolute wonder of a clarinet! I've retired my Selmer 10G as a result. I wouldn't consider any other clarinets for any other job than my Ridenours!

Now - I did not really need financing, as you are looking for, but the Ridenours do offer payment plans, as does PayPal! I would council you to give the Ridenour line major consideration. Tom Ridenour is one of the top acousticians in the industry, and his clarinets are worth much more than their cost!

Good luck in your quest! Keep us up to date with your adventures!

Find a local credit union you can join. They usually offer personal loans at stellar rates and if you pay it off, it helps build and maintain a good credit history. All thumbs up!

I sold (on consignment) a professional Leblanc clarinet in the key of A recently. It was in great condition and went for $800.
