I've recently met with a string quartet and played through the Mozart Quintet with them. We are not performing, but rather just enjoying playing together. They have asked me about other quintets. The Brahms is a bit difficult for them I think. Are there some others out there that technically don't demand professional players?

The Weber Quintet requires considerable virtuosity for the clarinet but is not difficult for the strings, except for a few short passages. Many string players find it boring, though. In a reading session, I once had the violist get up and leave in the middle.

Thanks for the info. I'm checking into a few of the things mentioned.

The Brahms is a workout for anyone. The viola part in particular has a lot of intonation challenges because of the double-stop intervals all over the place, and in most of the editions it has the most pages of any of the string parts.
When I get my clarinet students into chamber music, I almost always opt to teach them the Mozart or Weber first, as it takes me a lot less time to keep my violin/viola chops up to play those quintets. The opportunity to work with them while sitting in the quartet is wonderful!

The Reger Clarinet Quintet
not sure if it's easy, but I don't think it's harder than the Brahms.
