Hi all,
I was got to fulfill one of my clarinet ambitions last weekend and play the trio of Beethoven 8 at a charity Beethoven symphony marathon.
I was just wondering, does anyone know who the clarinettist was at the first performance?
Vanessa.

A bit of googling turned up an orchestra list for the first performance on 27 Feb 1814 in the Redoutensaal in Vienna. The clarinets are down as Joseph Friedlowsky, Johann Rüttinger, Conrad Mösch and Joseph Dobihal. The seventh symphony was also played at this concert. Who played what isn't clear.

Thanks - very interesting. I was looking at my Weston books last night but don't recall whether these players were mentioned in the lists of those active in Vienna at the time - will have to go back and look.

F. Geoffrey Rendall, a British historian of the clarinet, says in his book "The Clarinet" that Joseph Friedlowsky was reputed to have a "magical tone" by his contemporaries. Probably worth keeping in mind when we play the trio.
