I had a band concert tonight. It didn't go as well. The band director made me play contra for a song because of the first note. I was trying to get attention because I needed to put my bass neckstrap on and I needed to have someone hold my contra, but everyone was "too busy", so I ended up (on accident) hooking my horns together. Oh man, was I embarassed. Everyone came up to me after the concert and made some sarcastic comment. That was the last thing I needed. At a time like that, you would think at least one person could be sympathetic. Oh well, this was my last performance with the contra. At least it was memorable.

Okay, I'm done venting. Someday I will look back and think it was funny. In any case, I'm glad your performance went well, Lizzie. Take my advice and never switch to contra.

Leanne -

Small disasters are painful, and the others should be ashamed of themselves for criticizing you instead of being sympathetic.

The consolation is that after a year or so (and particularly at your 20th reunion), it will be a "war story" that gets funnier each time. Not only that, you get to embellish it. By reunion time you'll have kicked over stands, pushed a tuba player off the risers into the tympani and knocked the wig off the snooty oboist in front of you.

You can cry now, but you get to laugh later.

i had a band concert also. We were playing Molly on the Shore by Grainger. Usually our band director doesn't take it that fast, but of course, he just happened to get excited and took the piece almost two times as fast as we practiced it!!! And the clarinets were not very happy about that at the end of the concert...

For high schools it's about time for the end of the year shows.. and community bands are starting there summer seasons.. for example:

Tuesday is my end of the year concert. This is the big guy. All ensembles perform -- concert, choir, jazz.. boring as ever. The highlight of my evening is catching the jazz set and my best friend (and community band partner in crime) tearing apart various solos and improvs.

Today (Sat.) was the opening to the summer season for my military band. Music's easier in the summer, but you can tell the seasonal people are coming and going, and new people need to learn old music, everyone needs to learn new music. So needless to say, it was somewhat lacking. The marches were strong, but the pieces need some work. Parade season starts Memorial Day... you get the idea.

It's just that time of year.
