Hi! I've been playing on a Buffet Vintage (Bb) for about 3 years and was wondering if Buffet has any plans to make an A clarinet to match. Thanks
Jason

They just came out with an A vintage. It plays pretty good. When i was at clarinet fest, my roommate had one. They also had a few on display. I think it is wierd that they added the extra e-flat key that is found on the prestige r-13, festival, and the leblanc opus. I didn't get to findout the specs on it. They only thing i wonder about is the register key location. I wonder how far they moved up the register key location.

you can go to the buffet web site to get thier specs on it. I know that the higher register key location helps out the intonation. I had my register key raised earlier this year to higher location, and it helped out my intonation tremendousy.

The Vintage is a pretty close replica of the 1965 R-13 in the bore and the feel. The intonation is very good and the clarinet playes quite well. The new R-13s have a slightly different bore and the tone is lively and well centered. The Festival and the RC also have their own personality as well. My favorite is the RC, which in my opinion has the best intonation overall and the prettiest tone. Please go to a local store and play all of them, with your mouthpiece and reed selection you might like one of the others better. I don't think you could make a mistake with any of them.

Jason C.,

I, too, started out with a Vintage Bb about 3 years ago and love it. This past September, I was able to get an A to match. One can't draw major conclusions from only account or instrument, but I know that my A plays almost exactly like my Bb (response, intonation, etc.) and it is not at all stuffy like some other model A's that I've tried.

I think the Vintage A's are still being produced in small quantities (as with all A clarinets), so it might be difficult to track down 3 or 4 to try and compare, but it would definitely be worth the effort!

Good luck!

Melanie
