it dont mention what material it is made of, wood, rubber, or plastic.....
then the other one... yea.... no pic....
neither had brand names or model numbers or any thing... I think maybe I oought to start hitting the junk shops and take a few pic and get on ebay... .lol

those are a couple of the most impressive listings on eBay i've seen, for sure. the sterilization mention is definately enticing me and i think i might just bid--i know how difficult it is to spray a few inches of plastic.
serious question: can anyone tell us about their eBay experience purchasing an instrument? (you might want to make a new thread.) i'm thinking of getting a flute that way, since i'm no flutist but i like to play around--my flute is awfully shot.
thoughts?

Elise -- Do a search on the Phorum. We've had the eBay discussion a couple of times. The big themes are -- ask lots of questions BEFORE bidding, stick to the best-known brands unless you have knowledge of the lesser known ones, and expect the horn to need an overhaul (and bid with that in mind).

Here's another interesting clarinet for y'all. Here's the listing....Geo. Bundy Bass Clarinet with Case NR (sorry, haven't figured out how to type in for active link yet). Look really carefully at the photo...awfully small "bass" to me. Is it unique? Maybe should put a bid in for it as an oddity. :-)

Here's the description that goes with the Buffet.
"This wooden clarinet is an antique, with silver-plated keys that is dated from before the 1800s. It has a beautiful, robust sound; was purchased used originally, and has since had an additional mouthpiece, ligature and a tone-enhancing middle section added. It was played throughout college, and performs well for the beginning professional. "
Did they silver plate keys before the 1800s, or perhaps the keys were "recently" silver plated?
What is a "tone enhancing middle section"? Could it be the barrel?
Could such an instrument (pre-1800) be played through college?
I also got a chuckle about being purchased "used originally".
I asked the seller for a picture, thinking this would help identify the clarinet, but it didn't help due to its small size.

I sell clarinets and clarinet stuff on eBay all the time. Check the feedback on the seller and see how satisfied the people have been. And, obviously, don't buy anything from anyone who doesn't know what they're selling--they won't know how to pack it either. Oh, and you'll never have to have an overhaul on any of my instruments. They'll come to you in perfect (or as close as possible) playing condition or you'll get your money back. There are a few really great sellers out there on eBay--and several of us are regular Sneezies!

If someone really is interested in buying an old wooden flute, it is doubtful that they will try searching through "clarinets" to find it. The lesson is, if you want to sell something on Ebay, at least know what it is you are selling.
Hey, maybe the way to find a good deal on a clarinet is to be the only one to look for clarinets misclassified as oboes. You know what? I bet a good percentage of bass and alto clarinets put up for auction on Ebay are listed as saxophones!

I've bought 4 instruments on eBay recently, 3 of them fairly old Buffets (1920s and 30s) at low prices. One hasn't arrived yet, 2 have been exactly as described and 1 was inadvertently misdescribed (the upper joint didn't belong to the instrument), and the seller took it back immediately. The only one I bid significant $$$ on was an A clarinet picked out by Marcellus, but I went down to the seller's location and played it before I bid. (It's wonderful.)
On the other hand, I got stiffed by a seller of instrument stands, who had over 1000 positive feedbacks, and then took everybody's money and disappeared. Fortunately, it was only for $30, and I think eBay's insurance company will pay.
You need to be pretty familiar with the older Buffet keywork to make sure it matches what's given as the date. I always ask the seller for the serial number if it's not given. Also, you have to read the description carefully. There's a "Buffet" on eBay now (Item #1430640777) that has the mouthpiece and cap carefully described as having the Buffet logo, but all that's on the main sections is "made in France." The photo of the instrument in the case shows that, for example, there are separate sets of posts for the A and Ab throat keys, whereas on Buffets from that period, there was a single post for the bottom of the Ab key and the right side of the A key. The trill key guide doesn't have the triangular shape of this period, and the sliver key on the lower joint is straight rather than having the characteristic Buffet "swoosh" shape. While the seller begs off as being a bagpiper and gave a nice reply to an e-mail, you really shouldn't have to decode the description and put the photo under a microscope to realize that the only Buffet parts are the mouthpiece and cap.
To Ron B -- There's lots of garbage on eBay, but I don't think the number of good buys is going down. I did a search for for clarinet* -reaux -reso* -bundy -arms* -amati -belc* -artl* -band -vid* -reed* -bestl* -print, which strains out the Amatis, Bestlers, Artleys, Rico reeds, etc., and saved it to my Favorites list, which makes things a little easier.

Good advice. And, the Symphonie VII on Yahoo is mine (beesie7). You can always email the seller ask them for a phone number. But, the thing you want is a seller who is willing to offer a refund (minus fees, of course) so you're not stuck with a bad instrument. Some of us choose really good instruments to resell.
And, yes, there are still lots of good buys out there on eBay and Yahoo. Yahoo auctions lost a lot of business when they started charging fees, but after all--how else can they stay in business? They're still cheaper than the newly raised e Bay fees.

I agree - I've met some *very* knowledgeable woodwind sellers on eBay. Some sell rather frequently too. I keep those in my 'favorites' and check their lists a couple of times a week. If I run across something I 'can't live without'  and the seller knows next to nothing (it looks like a clarinet to me) I realize I have to put on my thinking cap and ask LOTS of questions - unless I know exactly what it is and there are lots of really good pix. Well, that helps me, needfully, hone my word skills and helps the seller better answer others' questions more accurately. I don't mind.

Remember that you can't put the signs inside parentheses. They have to have spaces before and (except for punctuation) after them. I've had a couple of links not "take" (and not appear at all) because I tried to use parentheses with them.

Hello!
My name is Anne-Marie and I live in Canada, Quebec province.
My boyfriend purchased an Evette wooden clarinet from the U.S. through e-bay : he did not know a thing about clarinets and I guess he was lucky : the clarinet has no cracks at all : it needed a complete overhaul and all the keys were repolished. It sounds great and I love it.
I do feel it came to be a little bit too expensive as compared to what he would have paid for the same instrument in Montreal, but he wanted to surprise me so he had to go with is instinct! I was a University student a long time ago in the music program (clarinet performance!) and I ended quitting during 1st year. At the time I was playing on a Buffet R-13 : I made the big mistake of selling my R-13 thinking I was done with music. Now I whish I had kept it!
I will probably get myself a new R-13 in the next few months and will surely sell my Evette through e-bay since we are satisfied e-bay users ( my boyfriend purchases all kinds of music "stuff"! He even has sold an electric guitar!).
I am glad I found the sneezy.org web site : I look at the postings almost everyday and I have searched for various topics in the archives and found a lot of helpfull tips and comments!
