Any suggestions on where to rent a C clarinet for two months? Would my Bb clarinet mpc most likely be interchangeable with it? Thanks, folks:)

Buffet, Leblanc/Noblet, Selmer and Amati/Forte and Ridenour Lyrique C clarinets all use Bb mouthpieces, so you'll be able to use your own Bb mouthpiece on any of them.

I live in the Philadelphia area, a pretty active one musically, and I've not been able to find rental outlets for students who need either A or C clarinets for short periods. The problem is that no music outlet will want to rent from their new stock (immediately devaluing the instruments because they become used). Very few if any keep used instruments around to use as rentals except for vendors who run school band instrument rental programs, which are limited to Bb clarinets. So, your best bet may be to find an inexpensive used Noblet or Evette C and take the plunge once. After that you'll have it any time the need comes up in the future. A repair shop might have one that is being sold on consignment for a customer who has upgraded to a better C clarinet.
Or plan to play the part on a Bb clarinet.

Now might be the time to buy the computer program that transposes music for me. There are pages and pages of flute parts that I want to play on my clarinet (since I don't have a clue how to play the flute) and it would take me days to transpose all that music.. THAT might just be the answer. Then I never have to buy a C or an A clarinet! AND I can transpose the Baritone BC parts to TC for the baritone players in our band who can't read BC. Two birds...one stone! I guess I'll post a new post...what's the best transposing program to buy for Apple computers? UPDATE: I downloaded a free month's use of Finale 2014. I started by scanning and transposing some grade 2 marches from Hal Leonard's Patriotic Favorites book. I transposed from Bb clarinet to Eb clarinet (down a diatonic fourth). SUCCESS!!! Then I tried scanning pages from a handwritten score from Music Theater International. Ugh. It's a mess. Finale does NOT like handwritten scores. Unfortunately, a LOT of the scores from MTI are handwritten.

Bb to C is up a whole step and add two sharps to the key signature. If you're going to be doing it often enough, learning to transpose on sight is a good idea.

The Ridenour in C is only $1,200. I’ve never played his horns but everyone on the clarinet internet seems to love them. Why not just sight-transpose on the Bb clarinet?

I'd love to be able to sight transpose. I'd have to start with Mary Had a Little Lamb, though! Unfortunately, I have about 20 pages of music that needs transposing before Sunday (I just got my score yesterday) and it's musical theater music which means 5-6 sharps and flats throughout. I'm a quick study, but not quite that quick! I called Ridenour today, knowing the great reviews they've received, to find out if they might have a used C in stock...no such luck. I may just have to take a good book with me and sit out the flute parts.

You can at least play the first note of each measure up a step. As this starts to feel familiar, play the first note of each beat up and so on. The mind adapts surprisingly quickly.

I purchased a John Packer C Clarinet for $389 (Model JP124) and it plays great. I got it from Pro Winds online. You can shop around and maybe find a better price.
I am a retired Music Teacher and have been playing Clarinet for 40+ years. (I'm not affiliated with either John Packer or Pro Winds in any way).
I was looking for an inexpensive C Clarinet and came across JP. I decided to purchased it online and return it if I didn't like it, but was really surprised when I played it. Needless to say... I kept it.
They have 2 models, one is designed for beginners so make sure to find the JP 124 which is their more advanced version. It is made in the UK.

Problem solved. I went ahead and purchased the advanced key John Parker C clarinet with the understanding that I have 2 weeks from the time of receipt to try it out and return it if I don't like it. Now I can play musical theater to my heart's content and be able to play all the flute parts as well as all the clarinet parts...and never have to learn the flute! THANK YOU, ThinkBig! I'm OK with it being made in China (for the price they're charging) so long as it plays in tune and isn't a piece of junk. If it's either of those, it's going back to Pro Winds. From your recommendation above, it sounds like it will work out just fine. And I can transfer my own mpc to it:)
