In your opinion which orchestra has the strongest clarinet section as far as musicality and tone are concerned (emphasis on good tone)!? Feel free to email me privately if you feel what you have to say is controversial!!

IN the united states I must say with OVERALL tone I have to go with Chicago. Other orchestras have good principal or section players with wonderful tone, but as far as the overall section from Bb, Eb and to Bass I would have to go with Chicago. St. Louis used to be high on the ladder, but it has taken a turn lately, and can be rather disappointing from time to time. Another pirncipal clarient to watch out for here in the years to come is Benjaman Freimuth of the Kansas City Symphony.
Going to Europe...........I would say probablly still Berlin, in the German side of things........The Scottish National Symphony for Great Britian(at least based on my latest experiences with hearing the orchestras of Britian live).
I'm not familiar with any orchestras of South America or well The southern Hemisphere for that matter.

Aalso another side note.......I know that this is a clarient board, but i know probablly many of you double on flute as I do. I must say that the MOST AMAZING flute tone I have EVER heard(this comming from 40 years of listening, directing, playing, and taking lessons from the best in the world Rampal, Baker, Bennett) The player is Mark Sparks of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. I was standing around my seat and chatting with friends when he started to warm up. And ALL of us just stopped talking and our jaws dropped. I can't really describe the sound, but it was enough to take any words I could formulate right out of my mouth. All I can say is WOW. If you ever get the chance to hear the SLSO live make note of Mr. Sparks. He will blow you away.

i do agree with phil. Mark Sparks is a monster. Before moving to st. louis he was associate principle of the baltimore symphony. That is where i am from. Hearing him is something that cannot be described. My clarinet teacher says the symphony lost a very good player. Mark Sparks is definatly amazing. He has a CD out which is amazing as well.

My favorite orchestral principal is Ted Oien in Detroit. Wonderful tone, monster technique, gorgeous musicianship. I've heard him live at a couple of the ClarinetFests, and each time was a highlight of the week.

Ted's also a good teacher for advanced students (along with being a nice guy!)

I have only been limited to hearing the Baltimore Symphony. I really like Steve Barta's playing. I am not sucking up since I do study with him. I really like his sound and his style of playing. He is also a very good teacher as well, and can be very opened minded. The second clarinet player Ed Jenkins as well. The two of them sound very good together.
