How To Mic-Up A Clarinet To A Guitar Amp
Author: Johnny Galaga

Anyone ever done this before? What kind of microphone do we get and where / how do you place the mic on the instrument? What are some good brands / models? Thanks.

There are clips which go on the bell and are used with a tuner in a noisy environment. Mine came with my Korg tuner. It has a 1/4 inch plug which you should be able to plug into an amp.

I'm assuming you want a good sound.

You can't take a mic, slap a XLR (mic jack) to 1/4" adapter and plug it into a guitar amp. There are some impedance and level mismatch issues because the amp is expecting a guitar level or line level signal but you're feeding it a mic level signal.

There's a impedence matching transformer / adapter (a quick google revealed multiple brands of varying price) specially made for these sorts of applications.

If your intention is to run your clarinet through efx pedals (which many including myself do on the saxophone), and you have cash to spare I would suggest an Eventide Mixing Link pedal. Google it and you'll see how useful it is (great mic pre amp, serves as a DI out, has aux out for monitoring purposes, many options to send the signal as a line level output to pedals or padded so you don't overdrive your pedals)

I use a high quality clip-on mic, the size of a pencil eraser. The brand is DPA. It requires phantom power (as do all condenser mics) through an XLR cable. I mount the mic on the underside about 3" above the bell joint. This sounds great through a PA mixing board, which has the advantage of balancing all the sources connected to it.

When I'm on my own with an amp, I run the XLR to a phantom power source ($20), then adapt to 1/4" for the amp. My amps are intended for electormagnetic pickups - they're not bad, but any of those commonplace "acoustic" guitar amps intended for piezo pickups have good options for impedance matching and EQ choices.
