 Leblanc Model 7187 Contra-Alto Maintenance
Author: SonicManEXE

Greetings all,

At school I double on the Leblanc student model contra-alto provided for me to use in our second band. I share this with one of my sophomores who plays it in our top group when I'm playing my soprano. The both of us know how gross that is, but neither of us have really done anything about it. It's gotten to the point where it's not disgusting or anything, but spring break is upon us and I really just want to give it a maintenance. The problem is that my parents will not allow me to bring this in myself and even if my band director eventually brings it to the repair shop, the store we (and basically the entire county) use is fantastic on brass but not so much on woodwinds, so bringing it there is kind of moot. So, basically, what I'm asking is:
- How do I clean the outside and make it shine? (The neck and the pipe are all metal until the body, then it's that resotone plastic. The keys are all nickel.)
- Just confirming that the best way to swab it out is with a bass clarinet or possibly bari sax swab?
- How do you clean the pad areas? I've tried swabs and paper, but the tone holes are so deep that even if I can touch the spit hanging off the edge of the holes (mostly the A/G# and F# holes) it doesn't really remove any of it.
- This instrument has a lot of lost action (literally some of the keys are not long enough for the rods they're on; on the key that starts at G/D and activates the second register key, the rod is actually visible by a little fraction). Is it worth doing anything to fix this?
- Lastly, the E/B lever gets stuck when F/C is pressed down. I've tried adjusting the post screw multiple times, but nothing seems to work as far as that is concerned. Does anyone know what can be done about this?

Thank you all.
