so, saturday was NYSSMA, otherwise known as all-county auditions. except for a traffic jam, most everything was going well...until i actually started playing. i played the first 2 movements of the mozart clarinet quintet, and messed up a few of the really easy parts, that i almost never fingered wrong..well, except for on my audition. AND, i totally screwed up the b scale, but corrected myself almost in time, i don't know if my judge (who was very nice) took off for that. AND, in sight-reading, i had 3 flats, ugh, and kind of forgot the eb or ab a couple of times. my judge actually asked me if i had a private teacher, and who she is. my teacher isn't very well known. or a very good teacher, she never really worked with me on interpreting the piece, so i was left to figure out how i should play it by myself. this is going to be my last year in all county, and i really, really wanted to play in the orchestra-but with how i did, i'm probably not among the top 4 clarinetists in the county. i don't even think i did as well as last year-a 95, i was 3rd chair in the band...i really wanted to sit high, but i guess i'll find out how i did soon...tomorrow, thursday at the latest. i'll let you guys know...but i have a bad feeling about this.

Think positive !! Trust me - I though I did horribly on my Nyssma audition but I actually did fine. Don't let it get you down.. you don't know how you did till you get your paper back !!!

About 2 months ago there were the National Comp Auditions here in the UK - and if you were monitoring the board closely, I put a post out about what happened to me too. I had the worst day of my life - I thought I'd be last, but I got some consilation - I was second to last!
DON'T WORRY! For goodness sake girl, you'll have plenty of opportunities to shine in the future - you shouldn't let one audition get you down - it is one audition out of many many more to come.....
Sure you can be disappointed - I was. BUT, use it as a "springboard" for yourself. Try to turn this into something positive, and try extra harder in the future to get what you want. For the mean time however, just relax. After all, you can't change what has already happened.

You know that you made some errors. I'll bet you the rest of the kids did too. hang in there and work harder for the next one. Maybe you have to relax a little bit more. Pressure is tough.

I heard a saying "You are your own worse critic".
It's true. I wrote a bass clarinet concerto, and I was trading compositions with a friend, and I was like, "You're good, I am horrible compared to you." He was like, "No way, this piece is brilliant, you're way better than me." So to prove who was better we entered our pieces in the same competition. I still think he's better. I guess I'll find out.

you can't stress over nyssma! i'm assuming that you're going into the 9th grade? up until your 10th grade nyssma audition for all-state, everything else is practice.
the fact that you caught your mistakes or recognized them is the most important part of the experience. the whole point of the nyssma festivals is to help you in your study and encourage you to achieve above and beyond where you are at the present. it's only worth what you get out of it.
the fact that the judge asked who your teacher was was standard. from what you said about her though, you might want to switch. ask your band teacher at school or friends about teachers in your area--it's another important part of your progress to have a good teacher.
now that you've had to deal with the tough sightreading and the scales (B is the worst!), you'll know what you need to be ready for next year.
