Hello,
I am giving myself a birthday present; I want to overhaul my Buffet R13, add a left Eb key, get the keys re-done in silver (I realized I have a skin condition that is exacerbated by nickel), and have pads/corks,tenons, etc changed out. I know it's expensive, but I've been saving. I have a sentimental attachment to my clarinet and do not care to purchase a Prestige or Tosca or the like. I love mine.
Anyway, my question is: who is the BEST? I want recommendations of people you have either personally used or know are used and recommended by orchestral players and the like. I am located in Texas and would like to stay local if possible, but I'll ship across the country if it's worth it!
Thank you all,
CB

I've never extensive work done by John Butler, but I've had an overhaul done and was completely satisfied. His prices were fair and the job was great.
I would like to toss the company of "Lohff & Pfeiffer" in the ring. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the USA/English website, but I've seen their instruments up close and personal at two separate clarinetfests and have been thoroughly impressed with them. Give them a call, and see what they have to offer. Every one of their clarinets were fantastic.

I'll second Wolfgang Lohff's work.
My CSG's have never been quite as awesome as after they were overhauled and tweaked. The improvement in response was dramatic, and people who try my set out are usually befuddled (how can a Yamaha sound this good?). :P

Just for my own knowledge, the people recommended so far are in a position to do all 3 things:
* overhaul (or turf out) an overhaul
* replate (or turf out) a replating job
* retrofit (or turf out) a left pinky Eb/Ab key?

I don't know if Mr. Butler and Ms. Karlsson replate or do custom key work. I do know that lohff and Pfeiffer replate and do custom key work. If you ever get the chance, you need to try out one of their plateau keyed clarinets. It's just so unique and still plays just like a clarinet should!

EDIT - A quick search shows that John butler does indeed do replating, even though I could not find it on his price list on his website. But all the folks listed should be easy enough to email/call and get the scoop.

I believe that Mr. Butler uses Anderson Plating Company for this service. I have used them a few times and they do superb quality work.

John Butler has done two re-plating jobs for me. Both of them were sent to Anderson Plating and came back looking brand new. John also made extensions for my Buffet bass thumb keys so that my arthritic wrist could cope with low C and C#

A big shout-out here to John Butler for doing a *fantastic* job with the overhaul of a Buffet R-13 for one of my private students.
