 1010 short barrel
Author: Tony F
Date:   2016-02-26 20:19

Would anybody have a B & H short 1010 barrel they would consider selling?
I'm experimenting with modifying small-bore mouthpieces to work on a 1010, and a short barrel would be a great help in sorting out tuning. I'd cover any shipping/packaging expenses.
Thanks.

I have a very short barrel, that I don't use.
Even for my reamed to 1010 specs french mouthpieces it is too short, so may be too short for you too. When I am at home on monday I will measure it.

Thanks for your time, Jeroen. The barrel I'm using now is 64.5mm.

My early 1950s 1010 barrel is 64.4mm.
Is that the standard length or the shorter?
I know later shorter B&H barrels were stamped with 'Short' - but my question is what actual length were they?

The 1010 tended to use much shorter barrels than the 926 which used about 67mm.
When I made barrels For Peter Eaton for the Elite model I think from memory they were made in range 62-66mm and the most commonly used were in the middle of this range e.g. around 64mm.

A genuine B&H 1010 mouthpiece is shorter than a 'normal' piece, so if you're modifying the bore you could consider shortening it as well. I use a B45 modified this way on my 1010s and it works very well with the standard barrel.

Do 1010s have slightly longer top joints compared to 926/Emperor/Edgware/Regent clarinets?

I had a 1010, but not for long - I'd only just overhauled it and then someone bought it off me right after I let them play test it during a show! Shame that as I wanted to add extra keywork to it (LH forked Eb/Bb mechanism and LH Ab/Eb lever) for my own use

Yes 1010 top joint is longer.

926 (excluding tenons) is 208 mm (top tenon is 19.2 mm lower 16.9 mm)
1010 ditto is 210 mm (top tenon is 20.3 mm lower is 17.0 mm)

so depending on how you call it either 2 or 3 mm.

caveat - instruments to hand are A clarinets with 926 c 1946 and 1010 c 1978
however since 1010 uses same barrels on Bb and A comparison stands.

Hey Tony, I hope your project is a success as it's something I've been thinking about too, though for Peter Eaton Elite, not B&H 1010 ... I wonder how different they are.

In any case I can give you measurements for the Elite if that helps.

My early 1950s 1010 (150xxx) upper joint measures 192mm (excluding tenons) or 228mm (including tenons)

My early 1970s Edgware (361xxx) upper joint measures 190mm (excluding tenons) or 225mm (including tenons)

So only a 2mm difference in my case. Interesting.

So including tenons there's a maximum of 3mm difference between 1010 and 926 type top joints.

I thought the 1010s probably had a longer top joint than the others (and consequently a shorter barrel) but just wanted to have that confirmed. Thanks for providing that info.

Also (which is far more obvious is) the 1010 Bb and A clarinets have different length bells - the A bell being around the same height as the 926/Emperor/Edgware Bb/A and Regent (Bb only) bell - 1010 Bb bells are considerably shorter by around the width of a socket ring and 1010 bells have a radiused inside edge to the flare instead of having a sharp inside edge like oboe bells.

Plus loads more differences that set them apart from lower order B&H clarinets.

Hi Jeroen,
I think that at 59mm it would be too short for me as well. I'm really hoping to find one around 63mm. I've just reamed out a Selmer mouthpiece of unknown model which played very well on my 926 Imperial. I also shortened it about 1mm by taking 1mm off the end of the tenon and then shaving 1mm off the mouthpiece where it joins the tenon. It plays well on the 1010, although it has a tendency to be a bit flat for the first minute or so. It was really a test to find out if it was practical, and now that I know it is I'll try it with another mouthpiece, possible a Rico Reserve X5. However, I've just bought a 5RV modified for 1010 use by Ed Pillinger, so I'll wait until that arrives from UK before I try any more experiments.

Hi Tony, my barrel that I use with french mouthpieces is 61 mm long and that is ok for at A=442 with large chambered mouthpieces. Could be a little longer though for some mouthpieces like B40.

I said I'd do a follow-up on this once I'd got the Pillinger mouthpiece to hand. It arrived today and first impressions are that it is everything I was hoping for. Tuning is spot-on, it's wonderfully free-blowing and effortless to play. The clarinet sounds better than it did with the B & H 1010 mouthpiece and I'm very much impressed with it. Thank you, Ed Pillinger.

I too love Ed's 1010 piece he made for me (his P45b facing). Outstanding!

Hi Dave,
I wondered who on this forum it was. Thanks for your assistance in working out the details. It's really an excellent mouthpiece, considerably better than the B & H 1010 I've been using. A while ago I destroyed the mouthpiece that came with it when I bought the instrument. It was an unmarked hard rubber piece that had been parallel-bored and was a delight, right up until I smashed it at a molecular level. I reamed out and shortened a Selmer HS* as an experiment, and it also plays very well, so I now feel confident that if necessary I can sort out a playable mouthpiece if it should become necessary in the future. Once again, many thanks.
