 Bought a new lapto....ahem....clarinet bag!

So I'm a big proponent of skipping those (IMO) overpriced clarinet cases, covers, and sleeves. I say, as having such a small instrument, take your case, and put it in a suitable laptop bag, messenger bag, or backpack.

So I retired my backpack yesterday as it was just a TAD small.....and also cause while cruising Target, I found an awesome Targus laptop case on sale for 35 bucks!

So here's a thumbnail bringing you to the photo album!

So excited!!! I'm getting and fully recommending these darned rolling cases from now on for "gig bags"!!!! Fit a ton of music, my ipad, clarinet in its case (maybe even two if I had a pochette style case), lots of reeds and accessories, and I can roll it along and know it'll fit on a plane!

I got the exact same one and the wheels wore tremendously just trying to get to my dorm and back from the School of Music.

Even just looking at it, the wheels are my biggest worry. I was checking to see if they were user replaceable, but it doesn't look like it. :( But for 35 bucks, I'm gonna give it a shot! And carry when I can, and only wheel for long distances, or when indoors (avoiding cement or pavement to try to minimize wear)

But even if it only lasts a year, if it works well and I like it, I'll look into a high quality airplane case next. Something made for a frequent traveler.

Screaming deal! I bought two bags from eBags.com, each for a great price. Unfortunately, one of them won't also hold my Eb. Fortunately, the bigger one does AND it can also be worn as a backpack. I can hardly wait for the next "big gig" so I have an excuse to use it. The first chair clarinetist in the college/community band I play with uses a C-Pap bag to hold her clarinet, music, and accessories and it works really well.

See if it will fit a small double case (Protec). I'm curious.

Alexi, does your new bag also have provisions for a shoulder strap?

I've started to look into bags myself. The model I think I want, an Altieri, is over $100. Your solution looks much more elegant, for a lot less dough.

May be a good idea to put some oil or grease on the wheel bearings in order to deminish wear. Of course, this does not help in protecting the treads.

I have a black laptop bag with wheels for when I'm walking a lot with my clarinet, and I have a red laptop bag with a shoulder strap when I'm going to school to teach. Love them both and love the accessory compartments that hold my reeds and other things nicely.

I have to say, pochette hard cases slide more easily in and out of the bag than the attache type cases.

I don't have access to one, however will be going to the clarinet day at Troy University (Which, Tyler, I believe you might be at too?!) and if you're there, or someone else with a protect double case, I'll give it a shot and report back.

This one does not allow for a shoulder strap. However when I stopped by Best Buy (just the place I stopped at, NOT trying to say they are the place to go), I figured they'd have lots of laptop bags. They had two sections. Laptop bags with shoulder straps (ala messenger bags), and laptop bags designed as backpacks. Both styles had examples that would fit a clarinet case and accessories. Just a little more $$$ than the one I found on sale.

My sentiments exactly!!!

I'm still going to keep my eye open for a pochette style case (single or double - doesn't matter for my purposes). The laptop portion has padding of it's own (to protect a laptop of course) so I have no worries about a "thin" case and the protection it might lack compared to a "thick" case.

Thanks, Alexi! I was just checking out similar laptop bags at the Staples web site, and there's all kinds of interesting possibilities.

Looks like I'll have little trouble finding one that'll house two small clarinet cases, a really thick music folio, all the usual accessories, and a gross of clothespins!
