After about 30 years year of orchestral work with one orchestra..www.symphonynb.com I have offially left this ensemble. The time was ripe and the direction this group was in did not fit with many elements that I stood for. However, I do have a number of other orchestras that I work for and I have also returned to my first love which is chamber music. I think clarinet players also need to change gears and re focus so to speak. Just thought I would let you know I am very active and am engaged in recording work as well.

D Dow,
Congratulations on a magnificent career (as I recall there was some military band service in your past). It is always tough to make a decision like you have just made but at a certain point, we all do.
I, over the past few years, have turned down all calls for jazz gigs. My decision was based in part on the fact that I was still playing very respectably. I wanted to go out that way! I have also left a very fine wind ensemble because of the director; he plays favorites, is tough on the clarinets and oboes, and is quite aloof in all is personal dealings (very few BTW) with the "troops." I could see myself not growing musically and even began to hate to go to rehearsals because I never knew if it was now my night to be the scapegoat.
However, my playing schedule is still very active though with shows, two wind ensembles, and some church performances. All this is very fulfilling and much more relaxed. I believe you will find the same musical solace in your re-focusing. Maybe make the next year the Year of Re-Discovery.

You present an interesting point...when to leave an instrmental ensemble.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my work with both fine orchestras and more recently an excellent regional band. Until recently.
The conductor of the regional band is now a 50 year old blowhard that absolutely refuses to play transcription literature - you know, the great pieces that the audience actually knows. Attendance is down significantly. His little cadre of band director mini-me's appear more than willing to go down with the ship. They have NO IDEA as to the breadth of wind band literature available nor the vital connection between programming and audience interest. The all deal with captive audiences in their directing jobs and have zero ability to reach the audience. It is time for me to leave this group and spend more time with my fine cigars, travel and spoiling the grandchildren.
In short, when the asses take charge, it is time for the seasoned musicians to retreat to other environs. Like a bad marriage, why stay and be abused?
