I didn't want to hijack a thread, so I made a new one.
Does anyone know where to get a nice inexpensive telescoping bore gauge, that you personally use and like?
I know you can get a whole set of them cheap, but I don't need a 6" bore gauge. I just need one for clarinets (top joint, barrel, mouthpiece). I know you can get a fancy special inside caliper or dial indicator gauge, but I want one to use with my regular caliper (I have two nice ones). I use my regular calipers to measure, but I can't get in the barrel, it's not ideal, and it scratches the work. I even thought of getting one of those flat ruler/triangle-shaped gauges, but the clarinet is right in between sizes.

Hi, I second Harbor. You may want to mark the handle to to help get the exact locations of the gauge.
Also you can buy a reamers at http://www.mcmaster.com, to cut the bores, however you really need to know the exact measurements. This is a great company. I'm able to make exact Chedeville and Kasper bores. Within a human hair or less. It's not for your average person, but someone experienced with tooling and drill presses. Bottom line is you can really screw up a mouthpiece, not just the bore and cut your hands, not a good thing!
I have to add that the German mouthpiece bores are totally different, much narrower. So be careful if you decide to get into reaming bores. Hope this helps.

I had a few telescoping gauge sets over the years.
I had a couple of cheap sets, like those Harbor Freight ones. They had a few problems, the main being the radius wasn't accurate, sometimes so much that the gauge wasn't able to measure a hole small but in the size that it is supposed to measure. A major defect.
I now have a set that is significantly better, made in the USA, but still isn't as good something like Starrett. The difference is not in measuring, but in how much "fun" it is to use, which is why I settled on this. For reference a Starrett set is more than $200.

Just bought the HF gauges- I think the set of six is worth the $15.00 I paid for them.

After looking them over, I think the HF bore gauges are OK. Maybe not as refined as more expensive ones, but adequate to do general clarinet and sax measurements. So, I think they are a bargain at $15.00. YMMV.
