 Something Wrong with Clarinet
Author: DeeRan

So my parents recently bought me a used clarinet from ebay. They don't really know a lot about the clarinet but wanted to surprise me. I was testing out the clarinet and everything seemed fine except for the lower joint.

I cannot play middle b. After playing around with it a couple more minutes I found out that the pad does not cover the lowest hole on the clarinet. I compared the clarinet with my friend's clarinet and the pads seem to be fine. Just that the pad covering the key is higher than normal.

Is there a way to fix this?

Take it to a technician. Probably a cheap repair job (along with any other issues you've not yet detected)

It's a fairly simple adjustment, but probably not one you should attempt yourself. A technician should be able to sort it out without any problems. Get the rest of the instrument checked as well.

If you live by UCLA I'm kind of close to you. I can probably fix it in 5 minutes. No charge if it's something simple. I'm up by Magic Mountain.

< Blushing > Thank you Pastor Rob and Sarah

A lot of people were so darn good to me in the past, so I'm passing on my talents when I can, most often for free or for very little money.

Hans Moenig gave me free clarinet repair lessons for a year and learning how to smoke a pipe with him! Hearing him swear in German was fun.

Iggie Gennusa gave me free clarinet lessons when I was too broke to pay him; during the summers, when attending Peabody Institute. Hearing Iggie swear in Italian was fun. I learned some colorful languages between Iggie and Hans.

Fred Ormand was the first teacher that got me to understand the clarinet at Interlochen and saved me from from walking away from music. He's also been right there with me when designing mouthpieces. He was so inspiring I was practicing 4 to 6 hours a day. Plus band and orchestra rehearsals. I simply couldn't get enough of playing, I was so addicted.

There's been others as well, Eddie Palanker, an amazing instructor and such a gifted performer. 60 plus years with the great Baltimore Sym. Surely the worlds greatest bass clarinetist and he could have sat in any major symphony playing principal with the regular clarinets.

Bob Marcellus, no words need to be said about this man. It was indeed fun smoking cigars and sipping bourbon with him.

So I feel I need to give back to the clarinet and sax world. Bob
