 (Seeking) Sellers of Older Instruments
Author: SonicManEXE

Hey all. I'm currently looking for a professional instrument for myself, seeing as I've grown out of my only instrument, my student model Yamaha (which has definitely seen its use in marching band). I'm looking into testing some Buffets and Selmers, but my question to you all is where can I find reputable sellers of older Buffets and Selmers, whether they're online or in the Miami metropolitan area? (Actually, I'll travel anywhere in Florida considering how much college stuff I'm doing in the near future.) I can order and test out any kind of currently-produced instrument I want from my local music store, but I've been doing research into R13s from the 60s as well as Balanced Tones and Centered Tones, and I'm very curious to hear how I would sound on one of them. I've been trying to find people who offer them for sale if they come across them, and I haven't had any luck.

Thanks!

I've found Dillon Music to be a reliable online resource for vintage instruments. There's old Buffets and Selmers in their Used listings now--though most are fixer-uppers.

I suspect some of the lovely people hear are reputable sellers, who could point you in the right direction. Or may even have some of these in stock :)

Try Christman Music in Naples, or Cadence Music in Ft. Myers. I'd call them up because sometimes they'll come across older instruments. Both stores are awesome with customers, and would be glad to help you find an older clarinet. I know Mr. Christman has a lot of connections, and could most likely get a hold of one for you.

Best of luck!

http://www.clarinetsdirect.biz may be an option. No bargains but good service.

Lisa's clarinet shop sells used Buffet clarinets. I wouldn't expect a bargain basement price for a good professional clarinet.

Just want to point out that all of the above suggestions come with a premium price. No bargains there at all just in case you are on a fixed budget.

Thanks you, everyone! I'll definitely use these sites to my advantage while looking for an instrument. I'm not on any particular fixed budget (maybe a max of the price of a Festival, which is currently about $4,300), but I appreciate you helping me out, Clarineteer.

I second the suggestion of Lisa's Clarinet Shop. I own a Festival through the shop's services and it plays just as well as I'd like it to. Reasonable price too.

Using Lisa's shop will certainly allow you to purchase a superior instrument. She is an expert. Also check out Walter Grabner at clarinetxpress.com for another excellent choice.

Wichita has some fine instruments, but very pricey.

Saxquest usually has a number of vintage clarinets, fully reconditioned in their shop. Mark will deal, if you ask him to....also look on SOTW; their classifieds usually has some good big bore clarinets, typically over priced, but you can also get deals...and make offers that are more reasonable than asking price.

On eBay, look for Clarion Music Services in NY state; that's John Parette...an excellent clarinetist who also reconditions clarinets that play very well.
