Hi

I have just read with great intrest the problems with anchor tonguing. Tomorrow , when I practice I will note if I do this or not!! As a beginer, what are the other bad habits I should look out for. I love reading the bulletin board and find the information really helpful.

Thanking you in advance,

Cathy from the uk

One mistake, in general, is not having a teacher.

I had a problem with anchor tounging also but i fixed it...try thinking the tip of the top of the reed touches the tip of the top of the tounge..just think that while you play and it will improve also try A Rubank Method book those are awesome! if you are a beginner i would try the Elementry then go to Intermediate and then Advance they are So neat i am on my Advnaced level and i am doing great! Try tounging sixteenth notes also.......And another bad habbit to watch out for is your sitting posstion our director always tells us we look like the Hunch Back of Norter Domb- i know i didnt spell that right...lol well i hope i helped and yes not having a teacher is a Big mistake! Have fun playing the clarinet! CLARINETS RULE!!!!

Keep the head level, and the chin flat. Many students don't take enough mouthpiece into their mouth. If you can afford it, I'd get private lessons with a clarinetist.

You're major mistake may have been taking up the clarinet in the first place--all of us know how time consuming and ADDICTIVE these things can become, even from the beginning. It is practically impossible to put one away even after opening that case for the first time, so you are probably "hooked" for life. The best advise one can give at this point, to save yourself from future torment and because there is no alternative, is to have all the musical fun you can. Take this from a fellow addict (clarinetist), try not to dwell on every little mistake and squawk you will make along the way--and God knows that we all make them, even the most hard-core addicted among us (Pro's, that is). Read all of the information you can about your newfound "problem" (here on Sneez) and try to behave responsibly (in tune) for your own best interests. But, above all, while playing along that long road you face ahead of you, ENJOY!!!!!!!! Clarinet playing is the best thing this world of seductive pleasures has to offer since ten-to-the-box, individually packaged, VanDoren V-12s. Remember to take it "one day at a time," and that we all welcome you to our mutual "misery." Here's to a fun-filled lifetime of Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst mistake about taking up clarinet is you can't talk while you're playing. Oh, if I had only been a violinist or a pianist!

I'm with Ken Shaw! You can't do much of anything while playing the clarinet, except play. It may sound weird that one would need/want to do something else while playing (ie talk, laugh, etc). I've missed many a downbeat because I was laughing; going from laughter to playing position is not easy to do in a fraction of a second.

Thje best advice is get a dood teacher who can (1) see you, (2) hear you, (2) and advise you. Trying to do it yourself is OK, but not the best advice. There is an old axiom -- "a lawyer who has himself as a client is a fool." Again, get a fgood teacher and let them help yhou -- it is well worth the money and avoid the frustrations later.

hehe sorry to correct, but my dad's a lawyer so i've heard this one before:

"A man who has himself as a lawyer has a fool for a client."
