Anyone else notice a big difference between the Vandoren B40 and B40 13? I've always never liked the B40 as I've always preferred more closed mouthpieces with stronger reeds. I currently use an M13 Lyre with a blue box 4. I was trying out some mouthpieces at my local woodwind store and he had a B40 13 out for me. I thought what the heck let's try it out, slapped on a blue box 4 (already broken into my current mouthpiece) and it played wonderfully. The B40 (when I had tried them) played too resistant with even a 3,5 blue box. Has anyone found resistance differences between other 13 series and regular mouthpieces? I was under the impression they all played the same except for pitch.

The only difference should be one of pitch. I don't see how a blue box 4 would even make a sound on a mouthpiece that open without some serious adjustment (at least if I was playing it), so maybe it was a B40 13 box with a different mouthpiece inside?
What else did you experience with it?

One of the differences between the traditional Vandorens and the Series 13s, AFAIK, is that the chamber is larger in the Series 13s. The larger internal volume is at least partly responsible for the lower pitch. It's hard to see how that wouldn't change the tone quality at least a little. The couple of non-13 VDs I have don't sound the same as the 13s - but I don't play any of them these days, so my experience isn't completely up-to-date.

It's definitely a B40 13. I bought it and I'm going to try it with other 4 reeds. The tone is very clear and louder than my M13 Lyre. Playing soft is no problem either, however I have found it more tiring. The 4 reed I'm using has not been adjusted, it's one of those few favorites that played right out of the box.
I tried it with a few strength 3 blue box reeds and for the most part they played okay, a little on the soft side. I think I'd use a 3,5 blue box on this mouthpiece for a balance of comfort and stability. That still makes it blow differently than the traditional B40.
