Bass Clarinet Transposition of Hindemith Bassoon Sonata?
Author: bradfordlloyd
Date:   2016-01-10 02:46

I'm looking for a transposed part for bass clarinet of the Hindemith Bassoon Sonata. I haven't been able to find one for purchase.

I'm wondering if someone has already done the transposition and is willing to share/sell it or can direct me to where I can purchase it.

Thanks for any help or guidance!

It's pretty easy to transpose at sight, and pretty short too. I haven't seen at already transposed, probably for those reasons. You might try Alea Publishing, they have a lot of transpositions for bass clarinet.

Yeah, my sight transposition is pretty weak these days, especially with bass clef and tenor clef!

I can pound it out with some difficulty (either in my head, or in a music notation program), but figured that I would ask here first.

btw, I tried Alea and it's not there.

Fun fact: tenor clef at concert pitch can be read "as is" on bass clarinet,if you correct the key signature. Just pretend it's written in treble clef and add two sharps to the key signature and off you go.

I have it for Alto sax in Sibelius format, and have been meaning to do a Bass clarinet part. I actually have a recording (on vinyl) of it being played by Duo Boheme di Prague- who did the initial transcription after asking Hindemith, and I intend to go through that recording and check for any octave transpositions.... on Alto there are a few places where it is at a different octave than on Bassoon...
Do you have Sibelius?

donald, thanks for your response. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who still writes out transpositions! And I agree that getting the octaves right is a real challenge here.

Unfortunately, I do not have Sibelius software. I'm starting the transposition myself on noteflight and will share when I'm done.

Remember that Hindemith is still copyright protected in the US, so be careful sharing any transpositions.

His music is public domain in Canada, though.

Thanks for the reminder rmk! My intention is certainly not to infringe on any copyrights.

Okay, so I'm nearly done with the transposition (thanks in large part to donald), and I honestly feel like this is something that should be shared to make the lives of bass clarinetists everywhere easier. Plus, it's a nice piece of music that deserves to be heard.

So, I've done some research and found that the copyright for this piece doesn't end in the US until January 2035. I certainly want to respect the copyright.

However, it seems silly that every bass clarinet player interested in this piece would either have to transpose it themselves, or be extra good at sight transposition as davidsampson suggests (btw, I discussed it with several friends who are excellent sight transposers and all of them said that the piece is technical enough that they would write it out for simplicity and precision before preparing it for any real audition or performance).

Let me know when you're getting close to completion.. I'd throw some money your way for your work and I'd like an excuse not to have to read it from transposition again.
