 Yamaha intermediate horns

Is anyone familiar with the Yamaha intermediate clarinets ycl-52 and ycl-64? How do they compare with a buffet E-13? Would they be a good choice for an intermediate player who is not planning on going professional, but wants a good horn to play as a hobby?
Also I wonder if anyone can share their experience ordering clarinets from woodwindandbrasswind.com or music123.com; they seem to have low prices. Music123 says that the clarinets come direct from the factory without any additional set up on their part.
Thanks for any feedback

I've gotten clarinets from both, and I was satisfied. I think wwandbw routinely checks certain professional clarinets, e.g, the R-13, before shipping. Others, e.g., Leblanc Concerto and Yamaha, are checked if requested.

I bought a Yamaha 52 for my niece to play and she's doing very well with it. I found a good used one on eBay and got a new Vandoren 5RV Lyre mouthpiece for her and it works great.

I think the Yamaha YCL 64 is considered a pro line instrument. I bought one for a clarinet customer and thought it was a nice instrument, but not as good as a Buffet R-13. Perhaps as good as an E-13. I've never played an E-13, so can't compare there.

If you find a good used 52, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. You'll probably be able to get one for less money than the Buffet.

I buy from wwandbw all the time and have been quite satisfied with the things I've gotten. I've also heard a couple of "horror" stories, but they take stuff back, so there's that to fall back on.

I bought a digital piano (Korg) from Music123 in Feb. No problems, they did just what they said they would. Best price I could find on the Korg at the time.

No exp. with WW&BW

Bought an R13 from Muncy Winds last August. They do claim to check out the horns. Horn played great from start but... Developed swollen tenons in 3 weeks which resulted in the bell stuck on the lower joint. Muncy repaired under warranty of course, very promptly (shiped back same day received.) (I had to pay shipping both ways, only real down side.) No further problems, Muncy did just what they said they would. Have purchased smaller orders both before and after the R13, no problems on these.

i playing on a YCL-CS model...it is around one year old and hasn't giving me problems...no swollen tellons....if you wan me to choose from a yamaha or a buffet R-13, i would choose a yamaha as in my country, i can send it back to the repairman in their HQ. as for buffets no good repairman onver here..therefore very risky...juz my opinions....:)

I had an OLD R-13 which was getting to the point where a professional technician suggested that I replace it rather than putting a lot of money and effort into repairing it. Lacking the funds to get another Buffet, I tried a used Leblanc and a new Yamaha 52. There was no comparison! The 52 is an excellent horn for the money. I've had it four years now, and not the slightest problem.

I should mention that I'm primarily a doubler, majoring in saxophone, but have played clarinet for nearly 50 years. If you're a pro clarinetist, possibly consider a pro level clarinet (the Yamaha IS good, by the way).

Dan -

What's the serial number on your old Buffet? If you still have it, I may be interested.

Ken, it was 47037, which, according to info on this forum, makes it a pre-R13. At any rate, I traded it in on the YCL-52 and got $300 for it. I thought it was a good deal, considering its condition (I bought it used in 1970 for 40 bucks! and put a little money into pads, corks, key adjustments, etc.).

It served me well for over 25 years. Thanks for your interest.

The first time I played with a clarinetist who played a Yamaha I was very critical of his instrument. He was never in tune and it sounded "funny." Later I discovered he never tunes and he always sounds funny no matter what he plays. Then I tried a Yamaha pro clarinet and it was nice. So, it's a matter of choice, but Yamaha is a real player in the pro world. I'm an old fashioned Leblanc and Buffet fan and probably won't change--but I've bought (as I mentioned earlier) some Yamahas for students and highly recommend them.
