How to find out what clarinet I have...
Author: Lee

Hi!

This is my first time here, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me of a good place to look that has pictures of the markings of various makers. I have an old clarinet that was my sister's. It was bought from a pawn shop in Toronto about 15 or so years ago. I can't quite make out what the makers mark says but would recognize it if I saw it. I'm just curious to know what I've got - I'm a flute and whistles player mostly, but like to fiddle around with this old clarinet too sometimes!

Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Lee

All I can suggest is to go to eBay and click onto "clarinet" and scroll down at as many of them as you can. Without a better description of what's on the instrument I'm afraid I can't help.

You might phtograph what you have (if you have a digital camera) and find someone on the BB, with *the* knowledge, who is willing to accept your jpg(?) file and let him/her review it for you.

Unfortunately, I am an amature myself and have no earthly idea of how to interpret what I might see.

Hope this might work for you.

Can you provide us with any clues at all? A few letters?

Lee -

Trademarks often get filled in with crud over the years. Scrub the mark with a damp toothbrush. Once you get it cleaned out, you should be able to read what's there, perhaps by combining what you can make out from the various impressions on the barrel, upper and lower joints and bell.

Once you can decipher even half of what's there, the rest of us can probably recognize it and let you know the rest.

Best regards.

Hi Brenda,
I have read a number of your posts. It seems to me you are quite knowledgable abt Leblanc clarinets. If u dont mind me asking, I was wondering whether you know anything abt Leblanc LL clarinet. Do u have any rough idea as to how old my clarinet is? Serial no. 38200. How much do u think it is roughly worth?

Rgds,
Squeaks

Squeaks - I'm not answering for Brenda, however, I believe LeB LL's have been made for years, and if their numbering system includes other high-end cls, my L7 [early 1980's] is a 43000's so I'd guess yours to be mid '70's. Someone will give you the LeBlanc phone no to call since no seems to have anything published. Value? its in "the eye of the buyer!!". Don
