I've been using a Rovner "Dark" ligature on my R-13 for the past 12 years.
I recently purchased a Normandy plateau key clarinet to use while the use of my hand is an issue. The Normandy is a plastic instrument, has a decent tone with my existing Rovner ligature, but, of course, the Normandy is a bit brighter and a bit less dynamic than the R-13 - to be expected.
Will there be any noticable improvement in the character of the sound on the Normandy by using a different ligature, either in the Rovner line or something else? The mouthpiece I am using is a Vandoren 5RV Lyre which I also used on my Buffet.
Thanks.

Hi Jerry,
Glad to see you finally found a suitable plateau clarinet. I think the Normandy shares the same keywork as my Vito plateau, which is quite rugged. Ligatures seem to be a personal thing. Some people, myself included, think that the ligature doesn't contribute a great deal to the sound as long as it holds the reed while others say that it makes a difference. Ligatures are cheap enough, experiment for what works for you.

Thanks, Tony.
I'm asking because it's been 12 years since I've been "ligature shopping." Just want to make sure I'm not missing something that makes a difference in a good way. And I know these plateau key instruments are quite unique and might benefit by something that I'm not yet aware of.

A gold plated ligature would probably be an ideal match for a plateau instrument. The few microns of gold plate really interact with the underside of the plateau keywork in a positive way - but you have to play facing north by north-east.

Interesting concept. Sounds like you believe the ligature has about the same - or less - value than $100 speaker cable.
