Date:   2001-05-08 05:01

Hi:
My 1994 R-13 has not been serviced since 1998, last time it was done
by Steve Fox in Ontario, I am looking for someone in US who can
actually improve my clarinet playability and intonation. does anyone
has good recommendation, I have heard Alvin Sweeney is good, how
much does he charge for overhaul? anyone has contact info for him?

thanks

Joe

There are lots of very good woodwind service technicians all over the world, Joe. What region in the US are you interested in?

Also, Joe . . . are you looking for someone to actually make changes to the undercutting or just set the horn up to top notch condition? There are far fewer folks that venture into the woodcarving activities. And does your r-13 really need that?

Drop Dave Spiegelthal and John Butler (sneezy irregular and board sponsor, respectively) a line.

Best to have a second horn available, this could take awhile.

- ALTERNATELY -

I have also heard my teacher's handmade Chadash clarinet. I thought Armaggedon would arrive before it, but what a beauty!

By the time you're done adjusting a stock horn, it comes out to the same money.
(About 4 large (USD) for either flavor of Soprano clainet. No case, but you do get a free swab and lollipop.)

I have to put in a word of praise for the Brannen Woodwinds (Sneezy Sponsor). They're used by Gregory Smith and other professionals for their personal R-13s because they are wonderful with these instruments. Although they do other instruments as well as the R-13, they really know their business. My clarinet professor had his done and it made all the difference in the world in his stock Buffet R-13. I played it before and after he had it done and stand in awe at what a nice instrument it became. I'm about to have one done by them. Go to their website at http://www.brannenwoodwinds.com and read about their services. I asked about turn around time and it's about 7-9 days once they get the instrument. But, you do have to make an appointment to set time aside on their schedule.

And, you should follow Anji's advice and have a backup instrument until yours is done.

Guy Chadish is really good with accoustics and the clarinet. I had some accoustical work done on my Buffet. My teacher recommended I go to him to get work done. The one problem with him is he is hard to get sometimes.

How much does the overhaul and brannenizing service costs in Brannen woodwind?

I noticed they said they only work on top of the line clarinets by Buffet, LeBlanc, Selmer and Yamaha. Would they consider an Evette Master Model a top of the line Buffet considering its essentialy a R-13.

Joseph,

I had Sue Schaake at Woodwind and Brasswind do 3 horns for me. (My Hoffinger A, vintage mid 1950's R-13 Bb, and my Evette Master) Sue only does the top line clarinets also. I talked her into doing the Evette (she was reluctant to waste her time) and she did a fantastic job. She seemed amazed at how nice that horn came out (it's much better than the R-13), in fact her clarinet tester was amazed it wasn't an R-13!

I had the horns plated and completely re-done so it took over a month. It would have been faster without the plating.

Sue is talented at what she does (I can't find which tone holes she rebuilt due to chips) and it was in the neighborhood of $350 out the door. The plating was probably half the cost of the work. In my book if you remember that Evette Master as being a good horn it should be worth the $150 to $200 it will cost to go through.

BTW she won't get it done in 9 days because she will use a detergent bath to clean it out somehow and then burnish the bore and then go into the oil baths for at least a week. I was so happy with her work that I have my new horn, a full Boehm 1925 Buffet Crampon Bb, with her for a thorough servicing.

Terry

I also use the Brannens and I highly recommend them. They may be a bit expensive, but it is totally worth it!!! They also like to have your horn back about a year or so after to do check-ups. I am getting ready to send mine off to be tightened. Best of luck to you.

My horn is going to the Brannens tomorrow. Ditto!!! My teacher says I won't know my horn when it comes back. I have used Bill Street in Maine and he also does a very nice job. He does some of the NYPO clarinets.
