 what is middle c?!?!?!??!

this is also as posted in the line...Just courious.............? by Corey...I just thought I'd put it in a new subject heading...
....................Well I wouldn't say im a theory expert, but I have studied composition with many great teachers. Ones who have studied with Stravinsky to Berio. I also have my many theory books on hand. One I'll give for example is the Bruce Benward and Gary White "Music in Theory and Practice", 6th edition...McGraw-Hill publishers.
This book states that middle C on the piano, or grand staff is c1. The C below that is simply c (small c)...The C below that is C (great C)....below that CC...etc.
And going up from middle c....3rd space c is c2...2nd ledger line is c3...etc...
Also...in many computer notation programs...for example...Mosaic, Finale, Music Time....etc....all give middle C as c1. This can be seen in the transposition areas of the programs.
I have never heard from ANY of my teachers that c4 is middle c and I have no idea where that came from. I teach middle c as c1, as my theory professors have taught at my school for the past few decades. I know of no other system...
If we want to use middle C as being c4 on THIS board...that is fine....but in practice across the music world..all I have ever seen/heard used is middle c being c1.

Go check out the "just curious" thread. There's info on there, and I think finally that everything should be completely cleared up! I'm not going to post here what I posted there...but rather just refer everyone to it. message 19, on the "just curious" thread should clear up any confusion as to what middle C is most commonly referred to as.

To me, "middle C" is the C just below the treble clef which is also the C just above the bass clef--thus, the "C" that is "in the middle." Everything goes either up or down from that starting reference point. Simple as that (only IMHO, that is) Good Clarineting!!!!!

I am married to a pianist and therefore have one of those strange instruments in the house. (I never could figure out where to blow into it, or where the reed went! And having all of the notes arranged in a straight line and in sequence just seems too easy.) If one starts with the first "C" on the left side (low side) of the keyboard and counts the "C"s the fourth one is middle C! And there are 4 more after it.

Hey....
we have one of them strange contraptions in our house toooo......

the middle C on it is the one closest to the key hole on the key cover.....well, that is what i keep getting told any ways... and there are 3 "C"'s below and 4 "C"'s above.... so I recon that the middle "C" would be C4 or the 4th C....

speaking of which... does any one know where I can get a practice curtain for it?

it originally had one, but the whole mecanisim (sp) is gone cept for the lift rod and peddle.... would like to get one, so can make the piano a "rinkitink" I do not wish to damage the hammers with tacks, would rather have the practice curtain set up for the rinkitink...

oh well....

Mike

In theory I we were shown two types of labeling the scale. One starts with C1 as the rock bottom C found on the piano keyboard. The other system uses the middle C (first leger below treble clef) as C1. The latter is an older system I believe and is the one we used in class. The newer system (in my oppinion) is the easiest.

There is no correct answer here.

We simply need a conventional mean in order to understand each other. And Mark has strongly suggested to use the most common one.

Even if somebody does not agree, I hope he/she will be intelligent enough to understand.

Stefano

Should we talk for miles, kilometres or light years?
