 Inconsistent Tuning Issues

So I'm having some discouraging tuning problems on my bass clarinet, where my chalumeau register is sharp, but my throat tones are pretty flat, and it makes playing in tune on a lot of pieces stress full. I've played on different basses on different mouthpieces but it still happens so I'm pretty sure I'm the problem, I would appreciate any to many suggestions the could help me, thanks.

I find myself going years in between playing bass an always start the first month or so back on a bass really having intonation issues. First the important thing to remember is that it plays DIFFERENTLY than a soprano. But I think what is at stake for you is an exaggerated version of soprano tuning. You pull out a lot to compensate for pitch issues but the rest of the horn will not move as drastically as the portion closest to the pulled out neck.


Of course if you DON'T pull out a lot at the neck (or mouthpiece) then my theory is not correct. Still I would pin the problem on some similar effect that would then be caused by pinching the reed closed (biting).

I must say I've never seen this problem in all the years I've taught and played. Since it happens on many different basses and mouthpieces I agree that it must be you. The only things I can suggest is that you tune your bass to the throat tones, E-Bb, placing the neck so those notes are as close to in tune with each other as you can get and than work at relaxing your embouchure and throat when you decend to the lower registe beringing the pitch down. You might also have to experiment with your tongue position in the front as well as the back. If after a while that just doesn't work than do the opposite, tune the lower register to get that as equal as possible and than experiment bringing up the pitch of your throat tones using the same technique but the other way around. Firming up your embouchure and expermenting with the placement of your tongue and throat on those notes.
I'm curious, how is the pitch of your low register when you play the 12th above using the register key?
Of course the 3rd thing is to get as much of a compromise with the pitch and then do what I suggested for both resisters to a lesser degree but for both.
