Does anyone know much about these? It is not metal. I found a picture of it in an old Conn catalog and have compared photos to the 1898 Wonder metal clarinet and it matches.

The catalog says it has "heavy gold-plating". I do not know why it has 3 barrels. It is supposedly HP, unfortunately, but that's OK. I just want to stare at it.

No. There are two barrels shown of different lengths. Next to them, is a ligature and cap, and a mouthpiece.

My initial impression is that they are simple Oehler/Albert system, if you didn't already know that. This system of keywork was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century USA.

You can look up simple Oehler system clarinets or what later become Albert system with rings on the upper joint tone holes.

Hope that gives you a direction to look.

Nice find there.

There are 3 barrels. One does not show in that photo.

I received the clarinet today. It is about an inch shorter than a Bb. When I play a C on the clarinet with the barrel the was in the same compartment as the main body of the clarinet, it matches the B on the piano. (The case is also pristine, by the way.) I can't find my tuner at the moment. It plays just fine, top to bottom, given that I don't know Albert fingerings.

It is extremely light and the hole spacing is just off enough to make 2 clarinet players both go, " Ooh! What's wrong with it?"

The keys match a catalog picture of an 1898 Conn Wonder metal clarinet and the serial number is from 1898. I haven't found the identical ebonite version yet. The catalog says they were made in high and international pitch A, Bb, C, and Eb versions.

Wow! Wow! Wow! I hadn't realized Conn made the Wonder in anything but metal. Simply beautiful find you have there!

They play wonderfully!

Fuzzy

EDIT: I forgot to mention - you probably won't like what you find when you finger the long C, B, D, and E. They'll most likely be about 1/4 tone out of tune. The rest of the instrument (at least on mine) is incredibly well-balanced with beautiful tone. The trick is in figuring out the tones mentioned above. I'd love to hear what you find as you play that one more!
