 help finding...Modern Clarinet w/Band?
Author: terry

1969 or 1970, my college band played a "modern" piece that had
a kick-a@@ clarinet solo. It was memorable for the highest
clarinet note I have ever heard in actual concert. We had a
"pro" do it for the regional competition, and the 1st chair for
the college concert (did not quite make the high note). No one
at the college library, archives, etc. have a program.

Question: Does anyone know what this is?? Please, the full
name and hints on were the sheet music may be found.

many thanks!

terry--

Some thoughts on tracking down the title you are looking for.

Have you tried contacting the college band director? Even if that band director has moved on, the score may still be in the college library and the current director may have an idea what it is (or perhaps let you hunt through the scores--if you can get there).

Do you remember who the two soloists were? One of them might remember the piece.

Does the group running the regional competition keep any records?

How about a library search of the college and local newspapers? The concert or competition may have been covered by one of them and sometimes they list the pieces on the program--especially if a soloist has been brought in.

Good luck on your search. When you find it, let us know what it is.

sorry to be a wet blanket.
1. Music Department was sold off about 5 years later.
2. no records kept
3. as I said, library and archives do not have records
4. probably poorly stated, but I would also like to know who
the artists were.

any idea what the piece was?
thanks!

Hi Terry,
One piece stick to my mind which has a great clarinet solo. It's "Blue Shades" by Ticheli.

It's a very Jazzy piece, with a lengthy clarinet solo.

However there are many many pieces which fit your description, this one wild guess...

I've performed Blue Shades before. It's a great piece but not that hard that you'd need a pro. to come in and play the solo. I was able to blay this solo by ear before I saw the music.

I got to play the cantrabass part with the University of Michigan honors band last year.

terry--

They SOLD the Music Department!? Amazing. Of course, when I was at Denver, they dropped football. Perhaps even more amazing.

The only other thought is to check an old yearbook. The band members may be listed with their picture. Then you may be able to contact some through the alumni association. Maybe one of them remembers the name of the piece.

Other than that, I have no clue. Can you hum a few bars? :-)

Do you mean band like a wind ensemble or a jazz band? I thought of the Bernstein Prelude Fugue and Riffs, but it's for clarinet and jazz band.
