So sorry to hear this. Frost, an extraordinarily talented man, threatened with Meniere's disease and possible deafness at the height of his musical career. I hope he can somehow find a cure. I heard him earlier this year in the Copland Concerto with the Houston Symphony. On his website, he says only that his doctor has advised rest for him now but he looks forward to returning to the concert stage to continue his project Genesis. I also look forward to his return.

Sad news indeed but I would like to ask if there are other people on here who pitch through vibration and where sounds resonate on their body. I have been playing again seriously for about three years after a 30 year gap and use this a lot for pitch, timbre etc.............. It feels quite innate and natural but I don't remember using it in the same way when I was younger.

If you look up Meniere's Disease you'll find bad news. Its cause is unknown. It's usually described as a degenerative disease. There's no known cure. Some cases improve with time.
Symptoms include vertigo, sometimes quite disabling, for which there are several treatment possibilities, most of which only talk about "lessening" the problem; and it involves tinnitus and hearing loss, which apparently is less treatable.
This ailment could possibly mean the end of Frost's career. Let's hope not.

My brother is an ENT specialist...Meniere's is a chronic disease of the inner ear. This can affect one or both ears ''' no known cure or treatment that changes the funtion of the ears affected is known. I would say that this will certainly curtail Mr. Frost for quite some time. Normally at the onset is a middle C hum which is is very loud in the ear or ears affected. Rest is not a cure and changes in diet or even a medication has not slowed down the onset of this condition. The condition is dehabilitating and progressive.
It is also believed Van Gogh has this condition and it does at times cause great disturbance in the equilibrium and mental state of the sufferer. Dizziness and stuffiness of the ear are part of the symtoms of this rather disturbing condition. Steriods and diuretics are not a cure but used in some cases.

I have a relatively mild (at this time) case of Meniere's Disease, in my left ear only. It began about a year ago with blocked sinuses that prevented my left ear from clearing, then caused an infection of the left inner ear with constant earache and tinnitus.
I saw an EN&T specialist for a couple of months and about all he could do was prescribe a low-salt/no-caffeine diet and some diuretic pills, which eventually cured the earache but did nothing for the ringing in my left ear, which remains unabated to this day.
While I can still play music (just as badly as ever) the ringing does hamper my enjoyment of listening to music, as well as understanding spoken conversation. I hope mine doesn't get any worse, and I hope the same for Mr. Frost.

I have what is called cochlear hydrops in my left ear, that is what they call Meniere's Disease but without the dizzy part. For a period of time the ear could be returned to a normal state with steroid injections through the ear drum. After about 8 months the shots ceased to be effective. My ear is now -70 db, with pulsative tinnitus, modulated gain and distortion from 1500 hz down. It is in effect useless and more of a distraction then assistance when it comes to hearing. There has been no change or improvement in the ear in the last 11 months. All the ENTs that I have seen say there is nothing that can be done except get a cochlear implant and learn how to hear all over again. At 72 I don't think so.

After repeated acute hearing losses during the last 10 years which always got somewhat better without treatment after some weeks, in February this year I had one again, more severe than before but again not complete, with tinnitus, "diplakusis" (different pitch, a second or a third), and dizziness. In October, when I was almost sure it would last, the tinnitus disappeared from one day to another, and the hearing improved almost to normal (with some ringing left)- without any treatment. I think this course may not be typical but still might convey a bit more optimism.

The "diplacusis" (not sure of the spelling) of which MichaelW writes two posts above, happened to me about a decade ago. It was diagnosed online by Tony Pay, who used to frequent the BB.
It is a very disturbing phenomenon, in which the affected ear hears a different pitch than the unaffected ear (in my case it was about a quarter-tone, maybe a semitone) -- so everything sounds out of tune. Fortunately mine went away after about a week, but it was frightening because, had it been permanent, I would have had to give up playing music altogether, and probably listening to music as well.
It might be good for aspiring full-time professional musicians to consider what sort of occupation they would fall back on should something bad happen to their hearing (or fingers, or mouth, or lungs).

"Diplakusis" is an artificial medical word of greek origin- where a "c" doesn't exist-, meaning double- hearing, and as the traditional medical language is a mix from Latin and Greek and most younger medics aren't too competent or interested in either language, you often find it written with "c". In my own case for some time it was not only the usual right- left difference, but a double-tone in a third or second interval in the sick ear only- an interesting experience, luckily completely ending after some months.

I spoke to him on my podcast recently and he seemed fine. I wanted to bring up this subject, because many requested I ask about it. But it seemed too personal.
Further, he was touring and playing again which to me implied good news.
I will be speaking with him again in the coming months, perhaps I will ask.
