My sister and I recently inherited an antique Rene Dumont clarinet. It is made of wood and is quite beautiful with a lovely sound. It needs re-padding, and the mouthpiece isn't original. Does anyone know how to find out what it is worth? I would either like to buy my sister's share in the instrument or sell it and split the money with her since it is impossible for two people to own one clarinet when they live far from each other. What little I have found out about the brand is that most of the clarinets are metal, and may not have such a lovely sound to them.

It would be wonderful if it was a valuable instrument, and to someone - the right collector - it very well may bring in some. Unfortunately, the price of a professional repad/overhaul would probably exceed the value of the clarinet.

Hello,
Unfortunately Rene Dumont is just a stencil brand and your clarinet would not be very desirable to a collector. In the condition you described the clarinet would be worth roughly $50 - $75 at the most. Hope this helps!

I think it is a stencil brand, one that was sold by a distributor or retailer under their brand name but actually made by another entity. Some were made by good manufacturers and reportedly can be very nice players, however they don't usually bring much money since they don't have the brand recognition. I would think it might sell at auction for $30-100 if it is a regular Bb clarinet that needs basic pad/cork work and depending on a few other factors. I hope this isn't too disappointing. Sometimes old clarinet mouthpieces can be worth more than instruments themselves, so definitely look to see what you have! Edit: looks like some others beat me to the draw...
