 Zampa parts
Author: DVandorio

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has Zampa clarinet parts 1 & 2 for either Bb or A clarinet. I would LOVE you so much.

Edit: To specify, I mean the Overture. Whoops.

Although I don't know the answer to your question, I should tell you that the name of the overture is "Zampa", which ends in "a" not "o."

I actually knew that. I had a momentary mental lapse when posting that. But thank you for pointing that out!

The orchestral parts for the overture are scored for C clarinet and are in Concert D Major, but it's a fairly easy transposition up a minor 3rd into F Major should you want to write it out for A clarinet or sight transpose it:

The part at scoreexchange.com is from the band transcription. It is not the same as the orchestral version though it may have enough similarities that you could use it to pull together a part.

Best regards,
jnk

I never realised this was for C clarinet- I've played it a few times, always on A clarinet with printed parts.... in the Clarinet Jack Brymer identifies it as being written for A clarinet if i remember correctly (he actually uses it as an example of when a composer knew how to write for the instrument idiomatically)

Lucks Music sells transposed parts for $3 each. They're probably for Bb, but might be for A; it's worth asking.

From pages 80/81 of "The Clarinet" (Jack Brymer)
When discussing the central C-G 12th he wrote "Herold knew this when he wrote his "Zampa" overture, which contains the famous solo which begins with this 12th. A delightfully easy solo - to begin _ for this reason."
The solo is shown in the book with the correct notation for A clarinet, and with a grace note middle C starting the whole thing off... This is how I have always seen this solo in excerpt books/parts when I've performed it. I note that in the C clarinet parts (from the link above) doesn't have the grace note.
I'd be really interested to discover the story behind this- Brymer obviously knew this as a piece for the A clarinet (as I do) but we have... parts in C
hmmmmmm

Edit- I looked at the C part again, and it occurs to me that the solo at "Andante con lento" (not marked solo in the C part) was on B flat clarinet... and the solo at "Piu Lento" was on A clarinet (WITH a written C grace note)

Both the C clarinet and band parts linked to in previous replies have the grace note (Concert A) as the end of the downward phrase and beginning of the recap of the solo. but not at the beginning of the solo as I thought.

Wow, Chris P. That link really helps. Thanks! If anyone else has access to parts I and II in either A or Bb, I'd be forever grateful. For now, this solo transposition should do the trick.
