(sorry if there is another topic from me that is exactly like this one, I'm sure I pressed Post last time but it ain't showing up...)
Yes, I did read the old messages....
Here's the problem. Looking for a new clarinet, but I'm not ready (nor do I have the $$$) for an R-13. I'm focusing on the upper-intermediate range, probably a Buffet instrument. I looked at the Boosey/Buffet Crampon site and it seems like a C-12 (conservatory model) fits my needs. Problem is, I read an old message on the board that said, in other words, that the C-12 was discontinued in North America a decade or so ago. Has it been? And if so, is an E-13 a comparable instrument? Is the E-13 much better than the E-11 (which I've heard disfavorable things about)? What the difference between those two models?

The C-12 or even their C-13 hasnt really been sold in the US for a while...but they are stil being sold here and there
I'm not shure about any of the big places...ww&bw, IMS, Muncy etc.....However Brook & Mays, a music Co in the midwest still sells them and theyre not too expensive. About the same price as a E-13 or 11.
I don't know the phone number or website right off bat, but they do have a web site....
I have heard that the C models are a different bore size....either bigger or smaller than theE or R line horns. The C line is still sold and is apparently popular in Europe and abroad.....but that's just second hand info...

Have you considered a used instrument? There are used C-12s around. I moved up to one recently from a Buffet Evette I played for 12 years, and it a very nice horn.

Although it won't be a direct answer to your questions, but Buffet R-13's are rather common used. Have you tried calling all the pawn shops in your local area? (If you're in a small rural community, you might not find anything.) I found a Buffet R-13 for $400 - Invested over $1,000 and 5 years, and just (under)sold it for $750. R-13's have been made for over 50 years. I'm sure you can find one used at the price you're looking for.

I tried out a C 12 at the Horn Trader's in OK City some time back and, it played very well, [even tho needing a bit more venting of the low F nd E pads], better than my Evette-Schaeffer and more like my memories of a couple R 13's. Looking for its place in the Buffet "ladder", I found a Buff ad in a fairly recent ICA magazine which seemed to place it just below the R 13. Don

E13s are really not a whole lot cheaper than R13s... if you are going to spend the money on an E13, I would save a little longer and just splurge on the R13.
E11s are not bad. A few of my students have them and they and I are happy with them...

I just spent a day at my dealer's (a Brook Mays company) play-testing clarinets for student-intermediate level players and spent quite a bit of time on new C-13s that they have in stock for the coming school year. It was an amazingly nice instrument with excellent tone and intonation. I found it superior in every way to the E-11, although the E-11 is less expensive.
You may purchase one from the Brook Mays website at <www.brookmays.com>, for about $1,290.00. It comes with a terrific case and will be a good instrument for you for years to come. If you can afford to buy it on a credit card or set up some sort of payments with Brook Mays, it would be well worth your stretch! I'm going to be recommending these to parents this year.
You can get a new E-11 for under $600.00 from International Musical Suppliers and Woodwind and Brasswind as well as from some of the dealers who sell new instruments on eBay (like instrumentguy and others).
The C-13, by the way, is made in Germany and is a very high quality instrument. I don't think it will disappoint you. And, I'm not much of a Buffet fan! I personally play Leblancs and usually buy them for my clarinet customers--but this one really impressed me. My dealer, who is also a personal friend, told me all the band directors in our area of Texas were going to be recommending the C-13 because it soared above the others in its price range.
