Hello everyone,
I'm a long time follower of his forum but only just made a name in hopes someone can help me with this problem.
I started playing tonight and was trying out some alternate fingerings for high C# and high D but something's not right and I can't put my finger on it (no pun intended).
The fingers are as follows: For C# (no thumb) RK, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, F/C key. Same for D except just no 2 (middle finger) on the right hand. These are the register key vent fingerings in the Tom Ridenour Fingering book.
When I go to play those notes with those fingerings, I get, at best, a rather unyielding somewhat shrill sounding D (for both fingerings), rather than the soft, flute-like beautiful quality that I usually get in this situation. If I try to alter the loudness or softness, the note will simply not sound or it will basically stay the same dynamic.
I'm not sure what could be wrong as it wasn't doing this before. It's not my reed, pads seem to be sealing properly (though maybe I should do a leak test), no visible cracks (though this clarinet had cracked once before about 5 years ago and was expertly repaired by Mark Jacobi), and I tried screing with the adjustment of the screw on the throat A key. I'm just not sure what it could be! Anyone run into this? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I don't have Tom Ridenour's book, but aren't those alternate fingerings played with the Ab/Eb key, not the F/C key?

Oh my goodness, you're right! Thank you so much. Didn't have the book with me.

No problem. I wasn't actually able to try those fingerings with the F/C key at the time, but I had a sneaking suspicion that's what the problem was. I had remembered seeing them with the Ab/Eb key on the Woodwind Fingering Guide:
