 Eb mouthpiece question
Author: ClarinettyBetty

Hello,

I am borrowing a friend's Noblet Eb clarinet for my community band. However, the mouthpiece is the stock Noblet that came with it. I would like to purchase my own mouthpiece (and eventually my own horn later), but I am wondering what kinds to try.

My Bb setup is an R13 with an M13lyre mouthpiece, Lomax ligature, V12 4 or D'Addario 4.0+ reeds.

I understand that I need to "try several," but I am wondering which ones to order on trial from my local music store. :)

Thanks!

Hello Betty!

I'm an "Eeffer" player, lots of years under the belt. Personally, after trying a lot of mouthpieces, from huge bucks to moderately priced pieces, I love and use the Clark Fobes E-flat mouthpiece. He only produces one type, and it is his personal model, he plays the E-flat chair in the San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Opera, and occasionally their Symphony. Very good street credentials, there. His mouthpiece gives a wonderful warm and ringing sound, very even response, and best of all - very good intonation. Worth every penny!

I'm in the Ken/Fobes wheel house 100%. If you're feeling rich, spring for the extension from Fobes. Made a world of difference on my old buffet effer.

I'm another Fobes customer, but now use a Grabner for most situations. Both are excellent, but for me the Grabner produces a slightly warmer tone without compromising the response. Ultimately the right answer will be what works best for you with your set-up, so worth comparing a few different options if you can.

Walter Grabner is a wonderful craftsman, as well as a really cool person!

On a lower budget, Vandoren B40 does an excellent job; it takes B-flat reeds very well.
Even on a lower budget - Geo M. Bundy does a very decent job as well (if you can locate a good used one).

I've been playing eefer for years myself I use a 5rv with vandoren blue box Bb reeds and optimum lig, has worked well for me. I do have to trim the reeds to fit above the barrel as I haven't been able to find someone close to Atlanta to fit a barrel or bell for the Amati

I find the Vandoren B44 really excellent, however I'm very new to Eb.

Not sure if you can still get them. I have an older Selmer clarinet and I was pretty good friends with Mitchell Lurie. I use his. When I bought the Selmer they seem to play better in tune compared to the Buffets.

As we know the Eb clarinets can all tune differently. Finding a good mouthpiece can really help a horn. Be patient when looking.
