Phil Woods just passed. Superb clarinet player which was not really emphasized. Check this out.

Phil majored in clarinet at Juilliard back in the day. While I loved his sax playing, it is a shame he did not play clarinet more often.

Thanks for posting this recording!
And bummer about Phil Woods's passing. He had the big band lead alto sound and was one of bebop's greatest masters. I'll be listening to my Live at the Showboat recording today.

I just love this version of Benny Goodman's old chestnut "Let's Dance," featuring Phil on clarinet. It was recorded following Benny Goodman's historic trip to Russia back in the ….. 1960s?, featuring a bunch of the guys who'd made the trip, and who'd had such an awful time (due to Benny's idiosyncrasies) that they had to come back to the States and 'vent' musically. The chart is by Al Cohn, and conveys (at least in the first 16 bars) the mood the guys returned to the States with.
Solos by Phil, Eddie Costa, (I think) Marky Markowitz, and Gene Allen.

By the way, if anyone's interested in reading Bill Crow's account of the trip, in which Phil and Zoot Sims feature, here's the link.

He only just retired from playing within the last month or so. Very sad news indeed.
RIP Phil Woods.
