David, can you explain what you mean when you say you are currently playing "M.R. Verney, Concerts Lamoureux....?" I know that M. Rene Verney was a great French clarinetist who played in the 1920s with the Lamoureux Orchestra and then played with the Guarde Republican Band. He was one of several distinguished clarinetists who endorsed the Eugene Gay Clarinet Method when it came out in the 1930s (along with Louis Cahuzac and August Perier). He made a few solo recordings that show off his virtuosity. Is there a concert series today named for him in which you perform or are you using a mouthpiece named for him (just as one was named for August Perier and another for Henri Paradis)?

As far as names go, M. R. Verney was short for Monsieur Rene Verney, and the JTL is Jerome Thibouville Lamy, the manufacturer. Thibouville clarinets (wood, composite, and metal) turn up fairly often, but the M. R. Verney design is apparently rare. Now I see that a M. R. Verney clarinet sold on the famous Internet auction site on August 30 for a very low price (under $100). Is that the one you have? Did it come, by chance, with a mouthpiece also stamped "M.R. Verney?"

By the way, there is nothing wrong with playing a Vandoren 2RV mouuthpiece. Lots of top French players used them and believed they were the most idiomatic for the French performance style. The French players would not necessarily have agreed that the Chedevilles, Alexander Roberts, Henri Leroys, Bettoneys and other expensive exotica that American collectors hoard were any better than their 2RVs.

To hear the recordings by Rene Verney, if you can't find the originals, the CD to get (now sadly out of print) is the Dante 2001 issue, "Grand Masters of the Clarinet, part 3," which also features some rare performances by August Perier.

On this list, 2010-10-23, reynoldsrf posted an enquiry concerning a Verney clarinet in A, but no one responded, evidently from lack of knowledge. The http://www.clarinetpages.net/vintage-odd-brands/jan-williams site also has a little on Jan Williams, who taught at Julliard and played in the Sousa Band. Clarinetpages also lists somewhere (I'm unable to find it just now) a metal M. R. Verney clarinet.

I don't get the connection. Why would they use the name of a famous violin maker on clarinets?
